Intellectual disability is sub-average intellectual functioning with impaired adaptive functioning. The limitations in their adaptive skill hampers the ability to cope with stressful life events. There are many issues which require attention while dealing with them like parental level, peer groups, schools, presence of comorbid conditions, etc. Interventions at right stage under efficient supervision can lead to healthy and smooth functioning of cases with ID and with good outcomes. Difficulties like lack of human resources, quality training of clinical psychologists in India, scarcity of effective clinical guidelines, conflicts among the team approach, acceptance in the family and society requires attention in current scenario. There are many things that can be offered but what we need is their acceptance in our society and awareness towards Intervention. This chapter aims at acknowledging these issues to create awareness amongst the responsible caregivers. Timely recognition of treatable causes of intellectual disability can be very rewarding and prevent a lifelong disability.

Intellectual Disability is sub-average intellectual ability with impaired adaptive functioning, which starts before the age of 18. They have IQ below. There are many issues which require attention while dealing with ID like human resources, quality training of clinical psychologists in India, the conflicts among the team approach, acceptance in the family and society and many more. There are 1.5 million people with intellectual disability in India. However, experts working in the field of developmental disabilities feel that prevalence is much higher. The population with ID is increasing but the resources to deal with these issues are few. The mental health profession is a multidisciplinary one. The psychiatrist, the clinical psychologist and the psychiatric social worker all have their significant role in the management of ID. There is a long way to go. There are many things that can be offered but what we need is acceptance in our society of such people and Awareness towards Intervention.

According to Law 5/2000, which regulates the criminal responsibility of minors, minor offenders are those who commit crimes or offenses established in the Penal Code or special criminal laws between 14 and 18 years. Those with judicial measures of internment present the most complex and disadvantaged situation. It has been evidenced the association between the experience of stressful life events in childhood and adolescence and a subsequent emotional and/or behavioral maladjustment, therefore, this study aims to know the stressful life events of a sample of youth offenders institutionalized in a minors center. For this purpose, the reports of 72 young people (79.2% men) were analyzed. The juvenile offenders presented a vital trajectory characterized by the experience of numerous stressful non-normative vital events typified as serious or very serious in the family, social, school, psychological and criminal domain. The findings are discussed in terms of prevention and treatment planning for antisocial and delinquent behavior in juvenile offenders.

Object: Depression is a common problem following a spinal cord injury (SCI) and can greatly interfere with the rehabilitation process because of reduced energy, negative expectations, and social withdrawal. Understanding various factors which influence a vulnerability to depression may improve the diagnosis and treatment of depressive disorders and can improve rehabilitation outcome. Method: A thorough literature search was conducted using Medline, PsychLit, PyschInfo, and Social Science Citation Index to identify relevant articles published between 1967 and 1995. Results: A diathesis-stress model is proposed to explain the increased risk of depressive symptoms after a SCI. Biological changes associated with SCI and pre-existing cognitive biases may influence the individual's vulnerability to stressful life events following the injury. The nature and frequency of stressful life events following the injury can tax the individual's coping resources. Furthermore, the perceived quality of social support and the severity of conflict within the family can influence the individual's adaptation. Conclusions: Social support and recent stressors should be assessed to identify patients at high risk for depression. Patients are less likely to become depressed if their independence is fostered and they are encouraged to develop new sources of self-esteem. Relatives can be counseled to help maintain supportive relationships within the family.

Abstract BackgroundIntellectual disability is a generalized neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by significantly impaired intellectual and adaptive functioning. About a quarter of cases are caused by genetic diseases, and about 5 percent are inherited from a person's parents. The objective of this study was to explore the candidate disease-causing gene in an intellectual disability family.MethodsWhole genome sequencing was performed on affected twins, their affected children, and unaffected parents, and data filtration for most rare variants and In Silico prediction tools to determine the pathogenecity. Further, Sanger sequencing was used to validate the causative mutation.ResultsIn the family, a previously undescribed heterozygous variant in ZBTB18 gene c.1323C>G (p.His441Gln) was identified. The mutation co-segregated with all affected individuals in the family and was not found in unaffected members.Conclusionsc.1323C>G mutation in ZBTB18 gene on 1 chromosome may be related with the phenotype of intellectual disability in this family. WGS is an efficient method to perform molecular diagnosis for hereditary intellectual disability.
