4-Helix Entrepreneurial Ecosystems

The use of strategies based on 4-helix entrepreneurial ecosystems is a unique opportunity to develop emerging economies, among which is Mexico, as well as to lead to social change by strengthening the middle class. Within this process, innovation is of great importance, as it is the primary driver of the competitive advantages of nations, as well as the structural transformation of the economy. The objective of this chapter is to analyze what would be the basis for the creation of a quadruple helix model that will lead to a structural transformation for Mexico in the medium term and thus combat poverty and violence in the nation.

This paper examines the evolution of academic and applied approaches to analyze the problem of economic growth since the mid-XX century. For quite an extended period of time, these views were corresponding to universalist economic policies taking no adequate account of particularities and limitations that a certain catching-up economy embodied. New approaches analyzing the problems of economic growth, on the contrary, individualize growth diagnostics, structural transformation and the organization of reforms processes for the emerging economies. We argue that individualist approaches might be potentially more effective than the universalist ones for solving the problem of slow economic growth.

The paper deals with 2015 trends and challenges for social and economic policy in the nearest future. The analysis of global crisis includes: uneven developments in the leading advanced and emerging economies; new models of economic growth which look differently in different countries; prospects of globalization and challenges of ‘regional globalization’; currency configurations of the future; energy prices dynamics and its influence on political and economic prospects of particular states. Current challenges are discussed in the context of previous 30 years. Among the main topics on Russia, there are approaches to a new growth model, structural transformation (including import substitution issues), economic dynamics, budget and monetary outlines, social issues. The priorities of economic policy are also considered.

BACKGROUND Digital health (DH) innovation ecosystems (IE) are key to the development of new e-health products and services. Within an IE, third parties can help promote innovation by acting as knowledge brokers and the conduits for developing inter-organisational and interpersonal relations, particularly for smaller organisations. Kolehmainen’s quadruple helix model suggests who the critical IE actors are, and their roles. Within an affluent and largely urban setting, such ecosystems evolve and thrive organically with minimal intervention due to favourable economic and geographical conditions. Facilitating and sustaining a thriving DH IE within a resource-poor setting can be far more challenging even though far more important for such peripheral economics and the health and well-being of those communities. OBJECTIVE Taking a rural and remote region in the UK, as an instance of an IE in a peripheral economy, we adapt the quadruple helix model of innovation, apply a monitored social networking approach using McKinsey’s Three Horizons of growth to explore: • What patterns of connectivity between stakeholders develop within an emerging digital health IE? • How do networks develop over time in the DH IE? • In what ways could such networks be nurtured in order to build the capacity, capability and sustainability of the DH IE? METHODS Using an exploratory single case study design for a developing digital health IE, this study adopts a longitudinal social network analysis approach, enabling the authors to observe the development of the innovation ecosystem over time and evaluate the impact of targeted networking interventions on connectivity between stakeholders. Data collection was by an online survey and by a novel method, connection cards. RESULTS Self-reported connections between IE organisations increased between the two waves of data collection, with Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and academic institutions the most connected stakeholder groups. Patients involvement improved over time but still remains rather peripheral to the DH IE network. Connection cards as a monitoring tool worked really well during large events but required significant administrative overheads. Monitored networking information categorised using McKinsey’s Three Horizons proved to be an effective way to organise networking interventions ensuring sustained engagement. CONCLUSIONS The study reinforces the difficulty of developing and sustaining a DH IE in a resource-poor setting. It demonstrates the effective monitored networking approach supported by Social Network Analysis allows to map the networks and provide valuable information to plan future networking interventions (e.g. involving patients or service users). McKinsey’s Three Horizons of growth-based categorisation of the networking assets help ensure continued engagement in the DH IE contributing towards its long-term sustainability. Collecting ongoing data using survey or connection card method will become more labour intensive and ubiquitous ethically driven data collection methods can be used in future to make the process more agile and responsive.

This chapter analyzes the novels of the British writer Barbara Pym, which are often read as cozy tales of English middle-class postwar life but which, I argue, are profoundly influenced by the work Pym carried out as an editor of the journal Africa at the International African Institute in London, where she worked for decades. She used ethnographic techniques to represent social change in a postwar, decolonizing, non-normative Britain of female-headed households, gay and lesbian relationships, and networks of female friendship and civic engagement. Pym’s novels of the 1950s implicitly criticize the synchronic, functionalist anthropology of kinship tables that dominated the discipline in Britain, substituting an interest in a new anthropology that could investigate social change. Specific anthropological work on West African social changes underpins Pym’s English fiction, including several journal articles that Pym was editing while she worked on her novels.

Among the different theories used to explain social change, the transition theory holds a special place. It has been applied to subjects such as demography, epidemiology, nutrition, etc. and most often from a multidisciplinary perspective. However, beyond the apparent uniqueness of the transition label there are quite different theoretical frameworks and presuppositions, which can be a source of misunderstanding. A first perspective considers change as the transition from one stable state to another and concentrates on the processes at work in the transition phase. It focuses attention on the interactions between cultural and biological variables and tries to take into account the consequences of the fact that they move at different rates. A second perspective conceives change as a series of stages (more or less stable situations) and proceeds to analyse the structural transformation of the organisation at each stage. The emphasis is placed on the transformations that take place during these stages. This brings us closer to the theory of stages. Finally, a third perspective combines stages and transitions. Change is seen as part of an evolutionary and progressive movement and as being reversible or not. This article studies the cognitive organisation of the different theoretical variants of the transition model in which food plays a more or less important role.

Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI) has been utilized by developed economies to enter developing markets for competitive advantages. However, recent boom in OFDI from emerging economies has prompted the question as to why these economies are investing abroad? A modest amount of literature exists regarding China and India, however, Turkey being an emerging economy has been largely untapped when it comes to determinants of OFDI. This study uses the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) to find host and home country factors which have led to OFDI from Turkey to their top 10 investment destinations for the past 10 years. The host country factors found to be significantly correlated with Turkish OFDI are innovation (Netherlands and Russia), technological readiness (Russia and UK), labor market efficiency (Netherlands), infrastructure (Netherlands), domestic market size (Germany), and exports (UK). The home factors found to be significantly correlated with Turkish OFDI are infrastructure and domestic competition.
