Wireless Sensor Networks have recently been used for environmental monitoring and real time event detection because of their low implementation costs and distributed sensing and processing capabilities. Event detection is a critical issue in wireless sensor networks. Fire detection is used as an example in our event detection system. Algorithms are required to detect fire sensors and measure the environmental parameters (temperature, humidity, light intensity, and Carbon Monoxide) to determine if a fire is present or not. It is urgent to research fire detection techniques that are efficient, convenient and practical. Although there are several works on fire detection using WSNs, sufficient attention has rarely been paid to using fuzzy logic methods. We present a novel approach based on fuzzy logic for multi-sensors data fusion in a wireless sensor network system with a node-sink mobile network structure to detect fire. Through simulation results, it is shown that the proposed innovative fuzzy logic algorithm can improve the reliability and accuracy of sensed information and reduce the rate of false alarm.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have experienced an amazing evolution during the last decade. Compared with other wired or wireless networks, wireless sensor networks extend the range of data collection and make it possible for us to get information from every corner of the world. The chapter begins with an introduction to WSNs and their applications. The chapter recognizes event detection as a key component for WSN applications. The chapter provides a structured and comprehensive overview of various techniques used for event detection in WSNs. Existing event detection techniques have been grouped into threshold based and pattern based mechanisms. For each category of event detection mechanism, the chapter surveys some representative technical schemes. The chapter also provides some analyses on the relative strengths and weaknesses of these technical schemes. Towards the end, the trends in the research regarding the event detection in WSNs are described.

Energy efficient operation is a critical issue that has to be addressed with large-scale wireless sensor networks deployments. Cluster-based protocols are developed to tackle this problem and Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) is one of the best-known protocols of this type. However, certain aspects of LEACH offer room for improvement. One such aspect is the arrangement of wireless sensor network with the fixed base station location. In this thesis we purpose Fuzzy Logic for Mobile Base Station (FLMBS) protocol that is based on LEACH but uses a Fuzzy Inference System driven approach to adjust the location of the base station. FLMBS produces reasonable improvement over LEACH in a network area greater than 1000 x 1000 m

As limited energy is one of the tough challenges in wireless sensor networks (WSN), energy saving becomes important in increasing the lifecycle of the network. Data fusion enables combining information from several sources thus to provide a unified scenario, which can significantly save sensor energy and enhance sensing data accuracy. In this paper, we propose a cluster-based data fusion algorithm for event detection. We usek-means algorithm to form the nodes into clusters, which can significantly reduce the energy consumption of intracluster communication. Distances between cluster heads and event and energy of clusters are fuzzified, thus to use a fuzzy logic to select the clusters that will participate in data uploading and fusion. Fuzzy logic method is also used by cluster heads for local decision, and then the local decision results are sent to the base station. Decision-level fusion for final decision of event is performed by base station according to the uploaded local decisions and fusion support degree of clusters calculated by fuzzy logic method. The effectiveness of this algorithm is demonstrated by simulation results.
