In this paper, a novel variable speed constant frequency brushless doubly-fed induction generator system using back-to-back multilevel converters for high power stand-alone power generation is described. According to control target, the unified reference-frame model is used to develop an improved forced power stator flux oriented vector control strategy. The similarities and differences between the grid-connected and stand-alone topology and control strategy are also specialty analyzed and compared. Simulation results prove the feasibility and validity of the proposed model, theoretical analysis and excellent performance of the proposed control scheme.

The Ship Shaft Power Generation System (SSPGS) is widely used in large and medium-sized container ship, and the SSPGS based on brushless doubly-fed generator (BDFG) has the advantages of smaller capacity of the inverter, lower capital operational costs and higher reliability. The proposed vector control method is developed on the power-winding stator flux frame and can be used to control the power winding voltage amplitude and frequency on the standalone mode. The generator model and the control system are developed in Matlab/Simulink. The results show that the control strategy has good dynamic performance when the ship speed and load are changed.

Based on the mathematical model of the PWM converter, control strategy of the grid-side converter directed by the grid voltage and control strategy of the rotor-side converter directed by the stator flux were established combining the vector control theory. The method using the nonlinear simplex algorithm to optimize the PI control parameters of the DFIG unit was first proposed, optimization results proved that this method had good practicality and robustness.
