Experimental Investigations on Capabilities of Resistance Spot Welding and MIG Brazing for Producing Corrugated Beams Using Galvanized Steel Sheets

This paper summarized the research work carried out by a team from Department of Steel Structures and Structural Mechanics, together with Department of Materials Science and Engineering, from University Politehnica Timisoara, which tried to determine the possibility to use welding for obtaining built-up cold-formed steel beams made of corrugated galvanized steel sheets (grade S350GD+Z). There were analyzed two joining processes: MIG brazing and Resistance Spot Welding with the aim to replace the self-drilling screws used until now. The results are very promising and these solutions of joining have beside economic advantages also technical and quality ones.

The paper presents the results of researches carried out by a joint team from Department of Steel Structures and Structural Mechanics, together with Department of Materials Science and Engineering, from University Politehnica Timisoara, focused on the possibility of creating built-up cold-formed steel beams made of corrugated galvanized steel sheets by resistance welding, which will replace the similar beams built by self-drilling screws. Resistance spot welding technologies were developed and tested, together with mechanical testing of the welded joints, which were performed in our laboratories. The results obtained and presented confirm the good quality of the welded joints and, as a result, the good capability of this technology to be used in production, to replace the old type of beams.

The WELLFORMED research project, ongoing at the CEMSIG Research Center of the Politehnica University of Timisoara, proposes to study a new technological solution for built-up beams made of corrugated steel sheets for the web and thin-walled cold-formed steel profiles for the flanges, connected by resistance spot welding. Within the research project, the experimental work includes tensile-shear tests on the lap joint spot-welded specimens, were different combinations of steel sheets with various thicknesses were tested and, tests on full scale beams in bending. The study intends to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed solutions, to assess their performance and to enlarge the knowledge by using numerical simulations for the optimization of the current solution and to define the limits of the solution’s applicability.

This article present the optimization work describes out to joint the dissimilar galvanized steel of SECC-AF (JIS G 3313) and SGCC (JIS G 3302) material. A zinc coating on the surfaces of the galvanized steel sheets will decrease the weldability characteristic of the material. This study used dissimilar galvanised steel sheets to obtain the highest tensile shear strength from the specified resistance spot welding. This research used the Taguchi method with 4-variables and mixed-experimental levels. The mixed-experimental level, namely 2-experimental levels for the first variable and 3-experimental levels for other variables. The highest tensile shear strength was achieved in 5282.13 N. This condition is achieved at a squeezed time of 20 cycles, 27 kA-welding currents, welding time of 0.5 seconds, and holding time of 18 cycles. The S/N ratio analysis has shown the welding current had the most significant effect, followed by welding time, squeeze time, and holding time. The delta values of S/N ratio were 0.79, 0.64, 0.26 and 0.07, respectively. The ANOVA analysis has shown that the P-value of welding current and welding time is 0.006 (0.6%) and 0.015 (1.5%), respectively. This result is expected for optimizing resistance spot welding quality in other materials or significant aspects.

The steel sheets used for the car body production are protected against corrosion by zinc coating. Resistance spot welding is used mainly for joining these sheets, because of its high speed and adaptability for automation in high-rate production. However, resistance spot welding has a negative influence on the corrosion resistance of joints. The paper focuses on the analysis of quality of welds on galvanized steel sheets and their corrosive properties. Tensile test and accelerated corrosion test in corrosive environment were used for evaluation of the welds’ quality. Protective efficiency of zinc coatings for automobile sheets was evaluated as well, based on the determination of their electrochemical characteristics in passivated and non-passivated state, as well as their corrosion resistance in simulated corrosion environments. Two types of DX54D+Z material were used for experiments: non-passivated and passivated with Cr3+.
