A New Unsymmetrical Diarylethene for Reversible Holographic Recording

A novel photochromic diarylethene, 1-(2-ethyl-benzothiophen-3-yl)-2-(2-methyl-5-(2-cyanophenyl)thien-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentene(1o) was synthesized, and its photochromic and fluorescent properties were investigated. This compound exhibited reversible photochromism, changing from colorless to purle after irradiation with UV light both in solution and in poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) amorphous film. Also, it exhibited remarkable fluorescence switching in the solid state. When we used diarylethene 1c/PMMA film as recording medium, rewritable holographic optical storage was performed successfully. The results demonstrated that the diarylethene compound had attractive properties for polarization holographic optical recording, such as high photosensitivity, high spatial resolution, excellent fatigue-resistance.

A novel unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene 1-(2, 5-dimethyl-3-thienyl)-2-[2-methyl-5-(2,2-dibutylfluorene)-3-thienyperfluorocyclo-pentene (1o) was synthesized and its photochromic and fluorescent properties were investigated. Diarylethene 1 changed the color from colorless to hyacinthine upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light, in which absorption maxima were observed at 554 nm in hexane and at 565 nm in PMMA amorphous film, respectively. This new photochromic system also exhibited remarkable fluorescence intensity both in solution and in PMMA film. The fluorescence spectra showed a systematic red-shift with the emission intensity of diarylethene 1 in a photo-stationary state was quenched to ca. 64%. The cyclization and cycloreversion quantum yields of 1 in hexane were determined to be 0.56 and 0.002. Polarization multiplexed image recording can be carried out in this diarylethene 1c/PMMA film as recording medium film.

It underwent reversible cyclization and cycloreversion reactions upon alternating irradiation with UV and visible light in hexane. The compound showed good phtochromism both in solution and in solid states. Diarylethene 1o changed the color from colorless to purple upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light, in which absorption maxima were observed at 539 nm in hexane and at 547nm in PMMA film, respectively. Using diarylethene 1c/PMMA film as recording medium, optical recording was performed successfully. This new photochromic system also exhibited remarkable optical storage character

A new photochromic diarylethene compound, 1-[2-methyl-5-(3-thienyl)-3-thieny-2-[2-methyl-5-(3-benzaldehyde)-3-thieny perfluorocyclopentene (1a) was synthesized. Its properties, including photochromism and fluorescence were investigated in detail both in solution and PMMA amorphous film. It underwent reversible cyclization and cycloreversion reactions upon alternating irradiation with UV and visible light in hexane. The compound showed good phtochromism both in solution and in solid states. Diarylethene 1a changed the color from colorless to navy upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light, in which absorption maxima were observed at 577 nm in hexane and at 592 nm in PMMA film, respectively. Using diarylethene 1b/PMMA film as recording medium, optical recording was performed successfully.

A novel unsymmetrical diarylethene derivative bearing both benzofuran and thiophene moieties, 1-(2-methyl--3-benzofuranyl)-2-[(2-methyl-3-thienyl-5-thienyl)-3-thieny perfluorocyclopentene (1o), was synthesized. At the same time, its photochromic properties were investigated in detail. The results showed that this compound exhibited reversible photochromism, undergoing reversible cyclization and cycloreversion reactions upon alternating irradiation with UV and visible light both in solution and in PMMA film, and its absorption maxima were observed at 523 nm in hexane and at 539 nm in PMMA amorphous film, respectively, upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light. Finally, using this diarylethene as recording medium, polarization optical recording was carried out successfully.

A new diarylethenes [1-(2-methyl-1-naphthyl), 2-(2-methyl-5-1,3-dithiolane-3-thienyl)]perfluorocyclopentene 1o based on a hybrid structure of naphthalene and thiophene has been developed. Its properties including photochromism, kinetics and fluorescence were investigated in detail. The results indicated that the compound exhibited good photochromism, which changing from colorless to orange after irradiation with 297 nm UV light both in solution and in PMMA film. The fluorescence switching properties shown the fluorescence spectrum of diarylethene 1o was decreased remarkable along with the cyclization reactions. Finally, using this diarylethene as recording medium, polarization optical recording was carried out successfully.

A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene 1-(2,4-dimethyl-3-isoxazol)-2-[2-methyl-5-(2-chlorophenyl) -3-thienyl] perfluorocyclopentene (1a) has been synthesized. Its photochromic properties in solution and PMMA film were investigated. Diarylethene 1a changed the color from colorless to red upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light, in which absorption maxima were observed at 515 nm in hexane and at 526 nm in PMMA film, The results demonstrated that it can be potentially used as polarization holographic optical recording medium.

Photochromic molecules are part of a large class of materials in which light stimulus not only induces a color variation but also affects other physicochemical properties. In the paper, an asymmetrical photochromic diarylethene, 1-(2,4-dimethyl-3-thiazole)-2-[2-methyl-5-(10-phenanthrenyl)-3-thienyPerfluorocyclopentene was synthesized and its photochromic and fluorescent properties were systematically investigated. The compound exhibited remarkable photochromic, changing from colorless to OrangeRed after irradiation with UV light both in solution and in PMMA film. In addition, its fluorescence property was also discussed. When irradiation with UV light, the fluorescence intensity declined remarkably. The results showed that the diarylethene exhibited a relatively strong fluorescence switch along with the photochromism from open-ring isomer to closed-ring isomer. Using this diarylethene 1a as optical storage was performed successfully.
