With the thorough application of Internet/Intranet in product data management field, system of product structure management based on Web has been becoming a development trend. A kind of product structure management method based on Ajax is presented. The method was realized through program. As an example, the algorithm was used in an actual product, and the algorithm was validated.

Abstract Product Data Management (PDM) systems are beginning to be deployed for organizing, accessing, and controlling data about products throughout their life cycle. In general, these systems lack integrated tools for prototyping PDM data, such as the Product Structure. Product Structure (PS) encompasses broadly the hierarchical organization of parts, typically denned by the bill of material, that describes the product from a variety of (e.g. design, manufacturing) views. Consistent maintenance and constant evaluation of the evolving PS is vital during iterative design, particularly when parts are shared across different products. The first contribution of this paper is a framework for understanding how PS/PDM fits within the broad context of mechanical design, leading to the identification of key desirables of PS prototypes. The second contribution is a system architecture for PS prototyping that satisfies these desirables. The system conveniently accesses different versions of the PS stored in the IBM ProductManager PDM system, and supports virtual prototyping of the PS using real-time interactive visualization in the IBM 3D Interaction Accelerator (3DIX) environment.

A product configurator is a system providing questions and sets of possible answers about products with sets of possible answers. This paper proposes a new idea for a configurator in which information about products are expressed as a structured net of interconnected classes of different types. Classes hold information about assemblies, product structural links, and logical constraints. Some classes have references to technical data on a product data management (PDM) system. Such a system allows flexible representation of knowledge about product configurations for production of aviation equipment.

Discuss the design of product data management (PDM) system based on Solid Edge Insight: Managed the different user roles by using the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0; Informed file changes to related staff timely by mail server to achieve the collaborative work between different designers that greatly improved design efficiency; Realized online browsing the Solid Edge files and their properties and BOM list via web part provided by the Insight, which made the system more humanized and visualization; Realized document libraries search by using its search view; Introduced the secure sockets layer (SSL) to encrypt network transmission system, which made the system safer and more reliable. Practice results show that this PDM system is able to fulfill the demand of online browsing and managing CAD products or related documents in minor enterprises.

Abstract We survey the current state-of-the-art in (commercial) Product Data Management (PDM) systems. After identifying the major functions of PDM systems, we indicate various shortcomings of the current PDM technology. An important shortcoming is in the representation and use of functions. We review the functional representation literature in the context of PDM technology. Systems management aspects of an engineering project is also commented on. We believe these two areas are the next two challenges awaiting PDM technology in the near future.
