The removable partial denture framework is very complex in shape with many curved surfaces, which is a very important assistant tool in prosthodontics. Generally, frameworks are fabricated by single piece basing on mould by traditional cast technology, which has many shortages of multiple steps, time cost and defects such as sand adheres, inner holes, cracks and segregation etc. As a novel method, selective laser melting (SLM) rapid prototyping technology has the advantages of short manufacturing cycle, high precision and flexibility, simple fabrication arts, which can be used to replace the conventional cast technology in the areas of prosthodontics. A SLM system was designed and developed by ourselves, which is consisted of an Yb-fiber laser, an optical scanner, a powder coating device, a gas purification system and a control system, the process parameters were investigated systematically and optimized, finally fabricated removable partial denture frameworks with stainless steel and titanium materials successfully by using the SLM system under optimized parameters. The tests showed that the frameworks have an average dimension precision of ±0.172mm. The wearing experiments on the plaster mouth molds demonstrated the removable partial denture frameworks fabricated by SLM can be fully applied to clinic after some post- processing procedures.

The primary goal of this research is the fabrication and measure of metal part made by SLM (selective laser melting) system. The SLM system is separated into two sections which are hard system and software system. The hard system is consisted of an Yb-fiber laser, an optical scanner, a powder coating device, a gas purification system and a CNC system; the software system is mainly consisted of CAD model display module, slicing and path layout module and processing control module. A removable partial denture framework was fabricated by this SLM system using stainless steel. A method of metal part precision with complex shape is that using reverse engineering and the average tolerance of metal part fabricated by SLM is ±0.172mm by using this method. The experimental results showed that SLM system developed by us can settle for the need of laser rapid prototyping in metal part fabrication.

The selective laser melting technology is an additive digital method that permits producing metal frameworks for removable partial dentures. The existing literature has compared this technique with the classic technique in terms of precision, quality of fit, and function. This work describes a clinical case of a metal framework produced by the selective laser melting technique in a patient rehabilitated with a removable partial denture. No adjustments were required when the metal framework was inserted, showing good adaptation and stability to the abutment teeth and surrounding tissues. Further studies are necessary for a significant assessment of this technique’s clinical applicability.

A partial removable denture is a device that allows the patient to recover from a partial edentulism. This case report describes the realization of a chrome–cobalt partial removable denture by using two different realization methods: (1) analogic framework and (2) hybrid framework. This allowed us to compare the stability, retention as well as clasp quality of both the products and to highlight their respective advantages, disadvantages, and limitations.

The primary goal of this research is the development of SLM (selective laser melting) system, which including hardware system and software system (associated control software) .The hardware system is consisted of an YLR-200 Yb-fiber laser, a pre-place powder device, a K100 gas purification system and a CNC system. The software system can be divided into several modules such as STL file loading and viewing, model slicing, fill path generation and process controlling. The pre-place powder device is the most key part of SLM hardware, and its construction and design method were described in this article. The thickness of slice should be adjusted easily and controlled in the range of 0.01~1.0mm by the system, and laser scan velocity can attain 7m/s, and some examples are shown in this article.
