Efficient Synthesis and Properties of a New Photochromic Diarylethene Bearing a Thiophene Moiety

A novel photochromic diarylethene based on thiophene moiety was synthesized and its photochromic and fluorescent properties were also investigated. This compound exhibited reversible photochromism, changing from colorless to violet after irradiation with UV light. It underwent reversible cyclization and cycloreversion reactions upon alternating with UV and visible light both in solution and in poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) amorphous film. Also, it exhibited remarkable fluorescence switching in the solid state. Using this dithienylethene 1c as optical storage was performed successfully.

A novel photochromic diarylethene based on isoxazole moiety was synthesized and its photochromic and fluorescent properties were also investigated. This compound exhibited reversible photochromism, changing from colorless to red after irradiation with UV light both in solution and in poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) amorphous film. Also, it exhibited remarkable fluorescence switching in the solid state. The results showed that the diarylethene exhibited a relatively strong fluorescence switch along with the photochromism from open-ring isomer to closed-ring isomer. Using this dithienylethene 1c as optical storage was performed successfully.

A new photochromic diarylethene compound, 1-[2-methyl-(5-(4- dioxolane) phenyl)-3-thienyl]-2-(2-methyl-3-benzothiophene)perfluorocyclopentene (1o)was synthesized. Its properties, including photochromism and fluorescence were investigated in detail both in solution and PMMA amorphous film. It underwent reversible cyclization and cycloreversion reactions upon alternating irradiation with UV and visible light in hexane. The compound showed good phtochromism both in solution and in solid states. Diarylethene 1o changed the color from colorless to purple upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light, in which absorption maxima were observed at 539 nm in hexane and at 547nm in PMMA film, respectively. Using diarylethene 1c/PMMA film as recording medium, optical recording was performed successfully. This new photochromic system also exhibited remarkable optical storage character

A new photochromic diarylethene compound 1-[2-methyl-3-thienyl]-2-[3, 5-dimethyl-4-isoxazolyl]perfluorocyclopentene (1o), was synthesized and its photochromic and fluorescent properties were investigated. Diarylethene 1o changed the color from colorless to orange upon irraditation with 297 nm UV light, which the absorption maxima were observed at 486 nm in hexane solution. This new photochromic system also showed remarkable fluorescence switching in the solid state. Finally, rewritable optical storage using 1o was performed. The results demonstrated that the compound was very sensitive responding to 633 nm recording laser.

A novel unsymmetrical diarylethene derivative bearing both phenyl and thiophene moieties, in which two chlorine groups were separately substituted at thiophene and the para-positions of the terminal phenyl ring, were synthesized. Its photochemical , fluorescence properties were investigated systematically both in solution and PMMA amorphous film. The results showed that this compound exhibited reversible photochromism, changing from colorless to purple after irradiation with 313 UV light both in solution and in PMMA amorphous film. Also, it exhibited remarkable fluorescence switching in the solid state.

A novel unsymmetrical diarylethene derivative 1-[2-methyl-5-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)-3-thienyl]-2-[2-methyl-5-(4-hydroxylphenyl)-3-thienyl]hexafluorocyclopentene (1a) was successfully synthesized. The properties of the compound, including photochromic and fluorescence properties of the diarylethene were also investigated systematically. The results showed that this compound exhibited reversible photochromism, undergoing reversible cyclization and cycloreversion reactions upon alternating irradiation with UV and visible light both in solution and in PMMA film, and its absorption maxima were observed at 593 nm in methanol and at 598 nm in PMMA amorphous film, respectively, upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light. In methanol solution, the open-ring isomer of the diarylethene 1 exhibited relatively fluorescence at 569 nm when excited at 360 nm.

A novel photochromic diarylethene, 1-(2-ethyl-benzothiophen-3-yl)-2-(2-methyl-5-(2-cyanophenyl)thien-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentene(1o) was synthesized, and its photochromic and fluorescent properties were investigated. This compound exhibited reversible photochromism, changing from colorless to purle after irradiation with UV light both in solution and in poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) amorphous film. Also, it exhibited remarkable fluorescence switching in the solid state. When we used diarylethene 1c/PMMA film as recording medium, rewritable holographic optical storage was performed successfully. The results demonstrated that the diarylethene compound had attractive properties for polarization holographic optical recording, such as high photosensitivity, high spatial resolution, excellent fatigue-resistance.

Its optoelectronic properties, such as photochromism in solution as well as in poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA) amorphous films, fluorescences switch were investigated in detail. The results showed that this compound exhibited reversible photochromism, undergoing reversible cyclization and cycloreversion reactions upon alternating irradiation with UV and visible light both in solution and in PMMA film, and its absorption maxima were observed at 511 nm in hexane and at 522 nm in PMMA amorphous film, respectively, upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light.

Its properties, including photochromism and fluorescence were investigated in detail both in solution and PMMA amorphous film. It underwent reversible cyclization and cycloreversion reactions upon alternating irradiation with UV and visible light in hexane. The compound showed good phtochromism both in solution and in solid states. Diarylethene 1a changed the color from colorless to navy upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light, in which absorption maxima were observed at 577 nm in hexane and at 592 nm in PMMA film, respectively. Using diarylethene 1b/PMMA film as recording medium, optical recording was performed successfully.

A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene bearing a pyrrole and a thiophene aryl unit 1-(5-cyan-1,2-dimethylpyrrole)-2-(5-aldehyde-2-butylthiophene) perfluorocyclopentene(1a) has been synthesized. Its properties, including photochromism and kinetics were investigated in detail. It underwent reversible cyclization and cycloreversion reactions upon alternating with UV and visible light both in solution and in PMMA film. The results showed that this compound exhibited reversible photochromism, changing from colorless to blue upon irradiation with UV light, in which absorption maximum were observed at 649 nm and 583 nm in solution and PMMA amorphous film, respectively. This new photochromic system also exhibited remarkable reaction kinetics in hexane solution.

At the same time, its photochromic properties were investigated in detail. The results showed that this compound exhibited reversible photochromism, undergoing reversible cyclization and cycloreversion reactions upon alternating irradiation with UV and visible light both in solution and in PMMA film, and its absorption maxima were observed at 523 nm in hexane and at 539 nm in PMMA amorphous film, respectively, upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light. Finally, using this diarylethene as recording medium, polarization optical recording was carried out successfully.
