Stretch-oriented cyanine-dye-doped poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films were prepared at temperatures above the glass transition temperature of PVA. The optical absorption spectra of the stretch-oriented films exhibited an anisotropy. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities of the stretch-oriented films were measured parallel and perpendicular to the stretching direction by the resonant femtosecond degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) technique, and a high anisotropic X(3) was observed for the uniaxially stretch-oriented cyanine-dye-doped PVA films.

ABSTRACTA study was made of third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities of new tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivatives, using the degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) method, as well as complex quantum chemical calculations. To understand the physical nature of the optical nonlinearities, we separated their electronic and nuclear contributions. We found that the electronic contribution to these nonlinearities predominated. Our investigations suggest that TTF may be a highly promising material for nonlinear optics (NLO).

ABSTRACTThis paper discusses the third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of substituted phthalocyanines measured by time-resolved degenerate four-wave mixing at 1064 nm. The study explores optical pumping as a mechanism contributing to a large third-order optical nonlinearity in one member of this interesting class of NLO materials, PbPc(CP)4.

Two kinds of cyanine dye were doped respectively in 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) at a concentration ca. 1.0 wt%, and the mixture was sandwiched between two pieces of rubbed glass plates. The third-order nonlinear optical responses of cyanine dye-doped 5CB layers were measured for light polarized parallel to the oriented direction by the resonant femtosecond forward degenerate four-wave mixing technique at 820 nm. The time resolution of the system was ca. 0.3 ps. The amplified spontaneous emission spectra of cyanine dye-doped 5CB layers indicate that the decay of the slow response was accelerated with increasing laser power. The population grating disappears within ca. 5 ps.

ABSTRACTIn order to discern the source of the third order nonlinear optical (NLO) phenomenon both morphological and electronic considerations are required. A series of styrene copolymers with varying amounts of p-aminostyrene or p-chloromethylstyrene were prepared as anchoring sites for chemically reactive electrophilic and nucleophilic dyes. For comparison, the same dyes were incorporated into composites of polycarbonate. Preliminary degenerate four wave mixing results for all materials indicate that the copolymeric support allowed incorporation of greater amounts of electroactive units, versus composites, and hence allowed high third order nonlinear responses (X(3)/α of approximately 10−13 esu cm). Third order NLO responses were absent in some composite systems due to limited solubility and/or phase separation difficulties.

New methacrylic monomers, their polymers with benzylidene fragment were synthesized. Structures of all compounds were determined by HNMR, UV- spectroscopies. The third order nonlinear optical properties of oxazolone, thiazolidinone and thiohydantoin containing compounds were investigated in solutions using degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) method at 532 nm.

Stretch-oriented chrysophenine-doped poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films were prepared at temperatures above the glass transition temperature of PVA. The optical absorption spectra of the stretch-oriented films exhibited a very high anisotropy (anisotropy ratio = 13). The third-order nonlinear optical properties of chrysophenine in stretch-oriented PVA films were measured by the resonant femtosecond degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) technique. The anisotropy ratio of the DFWM signal intensity was greater than 1000. The value of third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of a uniaxially stretch-oriented chrysophenine-doped PVA film was 6.9×10-13 esu.

AbstractThird-order non-linearities are important because they allow control over light pulses in ubiquitous high-quality centro-symmetric materials like silicon and silica. Degenerate four-wave mixing provides a direct measure of the third-order non-linear sheet susceptibility χ(3)L (where L represents the material thickness) as well as technological possibilities such as optically gated detection and emission of photons. Using picosecond pulses from a free electron laser, we show that silicon doped with P or Bi has a value of χ(3)L in the THz domain that is higher than that reported for any other material in any wavelength band. The immediate implication of our results is the efficient generation of intense coherent THz light via upconversion (also a χ(3) process), and they open the door to exploitation of non-degenerate mixing and optical nonlinearities beyond the perturbative regime.
