In this paper, we investigated the definition of product design knowledge, design knowledge origin characteristics and design knowledge formalized representation method, etc. We also established the methods to classify and represent the concept-design knowledge and developed an ontology-based model presenting the design knowledge as well as a model for modeling cycles. A framework structure of product integrated design knowledge model for supporting multidisciplinary design optimization was proposed, the fusion method of product integrated design knowledge was explored, knowledge expression of product design was introduced, design knowledge acquisition of multidisciplinary design along with evaluating satisfaction degree in process and method of objection were analyzed. Associated with the methodology of multidisciplinary design optimization, a prototype system supporting multidisciplinary design optimization was developed based on ideal framework of product integrated design knowledge model with the suitable software development tool .

Modeling approaches are gaining popularity in knowledge management (KM), especially in specifying knowledge contents. This paper addresses the enterprise knowledge modeling. An enterprise knowledge model provides users with an integrated, holistic view of organizational knowledge resources. Employing a reliable methodology is critical to building successful enterprise knowledge models. A good methodology provides an effective and efficient mechanism for developing a model. This paper first reviews the enterprise knowledge modeling (EKM) and its methodologies. An ontology-based EKM (OBEKM) methodology is proposed. Its products, procedures, and modeling language are described. The methodology is then applied to the construction of a shipping company’s knowledge model for demonstration.

Since knowledge management (KM) is considered to be an important function of the successful business operation, many organizations are embracing KM. The success of a KM project is dependent upon its contents. This paper presents a method for building an effective knowledge model which can help businesses analyze and specify knowledge contents. The method takes a decision-oriented view. For the modeling language of the method, Unified Modeling Language (UML) has been chosen. The method is applied to the vessel scheduling process in a maritime shipping company. The steps and rules are explained using an example, and the strengths and weaknesses of the method are discussed.

Patent is a key knowledge base for product innovation design. The current patent knowledge model and retrieving pattern can not supporting technology innovation sufficiently. TRIZ is a kind of innovation methodology based on patent analysis and there is a congenital relationship between them. Innovation design oriented patent model is researched based on inventive principles, standard solutions, effect and other TRIZ tools. As a Computer Aided Innovation system, Innovation Engine is introduced and developed. The effectiveness is proved by the conceptual design of Cotton Picker. The patent knowledge of cross domain is used successfully by Innovation Engine.

To promote the level of reusing the accumulated design knowledge in the company, we intend to develop a knowledge reuse model in this paper. First, the design knowledge is discussed, and a unified design knowledge model is proposed. Following that, we identify three design knowledge reuse patterns which contribute to the understanding of how designers reuse knowledge during the design process. Based on that, we propose a design knowledge reuse model. This model can provide design knowledge according to the design knowledge reuse patterns. The model also provides the ability to update itself according to the captured actions of the knowledge users. At last, the method is validated with a research cooperator on the hydropneumatic spring component.

The purpose of this paper is to build knowledge description model for complex product design. In order to uniform the semantic of glossary in design process, an extensive glossary semantic tree is built up and the corresponding semantic similarity calculation algorithm is proposed. The complex design knowledge can be divided into instance pattern, chart pattern, formula pattern and rule pattern. The knowledge models are proposed for these four pattern knowledge models. At last, a design knowledge modeling and reusing system for complex product is achieved, and the design knowledge can be inherited by it.
