The purpose of this paper is to build knowledge description model for complex product design. In order to uniform the semantic of glossary in design process, an extensive glossary semantic tree is built up and the corresponding semantic similarity calculation algorithm is proposed. The complex design knowledge can be divided into instance pattern, chart pattern, formula pattern and rule pattern. The knowledge models are proposed for these four pattern knowledge models. At last, a design knowledge modeling and reusing system for complex product is achieved, and the design knowledge can be inherited by it.

In this paper, we investigated the definition of product design knowledge, design knowledge origin characteristics and design knowledge formalized representation method, etc. We also established the methods to classify and represent the concept-design knowledge and developed an ontology-based model presenting the design knowledge as well as a model for modeling cycles. From the design knowledge management’s angle, design knowledge modeling approach is studied to support the design knowledge development, transfer and reuse for the construction machinery the knowledge modeling.

In this paper, we investigated the knowledge modeling and proposed an ontology description logic theory based on fuzzy interval in order to support the management and reuse of design knowledge. We also established the methods to classify and represent the concept-design knowledge and developed an ontology-based model presenting the design knowledge as well as a model for modeling cycles. We further applied these methods and models to develop a specific ontology-based design knowledge model and validated them in the management system of design knowledge for the construction machinery.

This paper presents a new kind of retrieval and clustering solution for multiple disciplines design knowledge during complex product development. The main contributions of this study can be focused on four points: The first is to distinguish the concepts and contents of ontology theories and semantic web. The second is to map the distinction and relationship between concepts to similarity and correlation of product design knowledge. The substances of conceptual hierarchy are introduced and their formal descriptions are given in the article. The third is to explore the specific calculation methods for semantic similarity and relevancy using the above theories and approaches. Finally, a model for design knowledge retrieval if proposed, and the tactics for knowledge retrieval and clustering are given.

Knowledge modeling and solving strategy are the key techniques of improving the innovation design ability of a complex product with design knowledge system. Aiming at a formal expression of product behavior knowledge, generalized variables are introduced from the bond graph theory. The attributes of motion behavior are used to realize the unity of dynamic behavior and static behavior. The ontology model of product design function, behavior, structure knowledge is constructed with the six-tuple structure. With the breadth first search FBS ontology mapping strategy, product design is realized by searching within product design knowledge base according to the name similarity. For the new function introduced by new demand in product design, concept learning based on variant space is proposed to get the general function unit or special function unit. Then the innovation design is realized through FBS ontology mapping strategy. The validity of the proposed method is verified by example of innovation design of multi-wire diamond saw.

Product design is a process of knowledge flowing and integrating. From the perspective, product design in distributed resource environment could be defined as the constructing process of a product knowledge model to satisfy specific needs of customers. This paper studies and builds structured models of product design knowledge, i.e. a customer need knowledge model, a DE knowledge model and a RU knowledge model. A product design knowledge model is the structured specification of a desired artifact including customer Need, Function with Environment (constraints), Physical principle with its Structure and Implement method and Technology detail (FEPSAT). A customer need knowledge model is constructed by customer Group feature, need Content and product Meaning (GCM). The DE knowledge model is constructed by Value, Profession, Culture and Experience background (VPCE). The RU knowledge model is built by knowledge service Content, service Input and service Output (CIO). The evolution of the product design knowledge models and the interaction with each other were analyzed.

Product design and development becomes increasingly knowledge-intensive and collaborative. It is very difficult to meet currently imperious needs for the traditional design mode, knowledge managing methods and the geometry-centric application tool. Designers require more generic knowledge of design and design process and more intelligent system. It establishes the FBPSS framework system supporting modeling of product function, behavior, principle, state and structure. Based on this FBPSS framework system, ontology-based product design system is developed through design knowledge repositories.

In order to realize information sharing and interchange of complex product multidisciplinary collaborative design (MCD) design process and resources. The Process integrated system control of product multidisciplinary collaborative design was analyzed firstly in this paper, then design process of complex product for supporting multidisciplinary collaborative was introduced, a detailed description is given of the organization structure and modeling process of MCD-oriented Integration of Product Design Meta-model ; and concrete implement process of process integrated system control method was introduced to effectively realize information sharing and interchange between product design process and resources.
