Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were used to modify bitumen. Effect of LDHs on physical properties and chemical compositions of bitumen was investigated. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was carried out to analyze the structural change of LDHs modified bitumen after UV aging. The results show that LDHs is effective in improving the UV aging resistance of bitumen since the viscosity aging index (VAI) and softening point increment (SPI) of bitumen decrease while the retained penetration ratio (RPR) increases with increasing LDHs contents. The carbonyl and sulfoxide of LDHs modified bitumen presented a smaller increase after UV aging in comparison with unmodified bitumen according to FTIR analysis, and the changing rate of carbonyl and sulfoxide index of aromatics and asphaltenes reduced obviously compared with the slight changes of saturates and resins after the introduction of LDHs during UV aging, which demonstrated that LDHs mainly inhibit the oxidation of aromatics and asphaltenes during the UV aging.

Ultraviolet (UV) absorber residue was used to modify bitumen. Effects of UV absorber residue on thermo-oxidative and UV aging properties of bitumen were evaluated by conventional physical properties and SARA (saturates, aromatics, resins and bitumenenes) analysis. The results showed that the viscosity aging index (VAI) and softening point increment (SPI) of bitumen decreased significantly due to introduction of the UV absorber residue, and the ductility retention rate (DRR) was evidently higher compared to the pristine bitumen. SARA show that UV absorber residue can effectively restrain the gelatinization of bitumen resulted from aging. As a consequence, the UV absorber residue modified bitumen displays enhanced aging resistance properties, which can be attributed to the physical sorption of activated carbon to lighter components in the thermo-oxidative aging process and the absorption of UV absorption residue to the ultraviolet light in the process of UV aging.

This study investigated the influence of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) on the fatigue properties of asphalt mixture. In this paper, different aging levels (thin film oven test (TFOT) and ultraviolet radiation aging (UV aging for short)) of bitumen modified with various mass ratios of the LDHs were investigated. The TFOT and UV aging process were used to simulate short-term field thermal-oxidative aging and long-term field light UV aging of bitumen, respectively. The influences of LDHs on the fatigue properties of LDHs were evaluated by dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and indirect tensile fatigue test. Results indicated that the introduction of LDHs could change the fatigue properties of bitumen under a stress control mode. The mixture with modified bitumen showed better fatigue resistance than the mixture with base bitumen. The results illustrated that the LDHs would be alternative modifiers used in the bitumen to improve the lifetime of asphalt pavements.

Effect of three de-icing additives: NaCl, wrapped NaCl (W-NaCl) and Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) on thermo-oxidative and ultraviolet aging properties of bitumen were investigated by thin film oven test (TFOT), pressure aging vessel (PAV) and ultraviolet (UV) radiation test. The experimental result illustrated that compared with bitumen with MF, the softening point and viscosity of bitumen with NaCl and W-NaCl increased and the ductility decreased distinctly after TFOT, PAV and UV aging, indicating that NaCl and W-NaCl accelerated the aging of bitumen. However, for bitumen with LDHs, the softening point and viscosity decreased significantly, the ductility increased after aging, which demonstrated that the anti-aging properties of bitumen were improved effectively by LDHs.

The crystal structure, microscopic morphology, particle size distribution and UV shielding properties of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with different particle size were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), laser particle size analysis and ultraviolet and visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometer. The effects of LDHs with different particle size on the physical, rheological properties and UV aging resistance of bitumen were investigated by conventional physical properties and dynamic rheological characteristics. The results indicated that the particle size of LDHs had a little effect on the physical properties, and it had some influence on rheological properties of bitumen, but its influence on the UV aging resistance of bitumen was different significantly. When UV aging time was 9d, the viscosity aging indexes of bitumen modified by LDHs with different particle size (80nm, 115nm and 180nm) decreased by 48.2%, 58.1% and 63.8% compared with the pristine bitumen, respectively. LDHs with the particle size of 180 nm showed better improvement than other two kinds of LDHs on UV aging resistance of bitumen.
