0Cr17Ni7Al is a precipitation hardening stainless steel, which combines the advantages of austenitic stainless steel and martensitic stainless steel. 0Cr17Ni7Al shows good corrosion resistance, excellent processability and high strength. This paper is mainly focused on the fracture morphology of 0Cr17Ni7Al wire during torsional deformation. Cracking mechanism and torsion failure reason is analyzed in detail. The results show that AlN inclusions are observed both in raw steel wire and fracture, the micro-cracks appear along the axial direction of the steel wire. The torsion strength is normally 2958MPa. but, the local stress of steel wire reaches up to5295MPa when a 0.4mm deep micro-crack locates on the surface of steel wire, and the local stress is obtained to 2953MPa around a 10μm AlN inclusion. Stress concentrating is caused by inclusions and micro-cracks, and the crack propagation lead to the torsion failure of steel wire when the local stress is beyond the torsion limit.

Precipitation hardening stainless steel has the advantages of both austenitic stainless steel and martensitic stainless steel, including good corrosion resistance, excellent processability and high strength. With the evolution of microstructure and properties of semi-austenitic precipitation hardening stainless steel (D631) during drawing process and aging treatment, the working hardening behaviors, law of phase transition, dissolution and precipitation state of alloying element are investigated to gain the toughness mechanism of D631. The results show that the tensile strength increases with the increase of the reduction of area, on the contrary, the plasticity decreases gradually. The tensile strength is 1529 MPa while the reduction of area is 54%. By means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and metallograpic observation, the content of martensite increases with the increase of deformation, and makes the higher strength and lower plasticity. The alloying element dissolved in the matrix precipitates in fine particles by aging treatment, resulting in a higher strength of 1948MPa.

Abstract Crucible 174 SXR is a premium-quality precipitation-hardening stainless steel designed for use as rifle barrels. It is a modification of Crucible’s 17Cr-4Ni that offers substantially improved machinability without sacrificing toughness. Its excellent corrosion resistance approaches that of a 300 series austenitic stainless steel, while its high strength is characteristic of 400 series martensitic stainless steels. At similar hardness levels, Crucible 174 SXR offers greater toughness than either the 410 or 416 stainless steels which are commonly used for rifle barrels. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming and heat treating. Filing Code: SS-1034. Producer or source: Crucible Service Centers.
