Work-life balance entails to the working arrangements that ensure an employee's personal and professional duties are balanced. Poor work-life balance is a key risk that jeopardizes employee well-being, performance, and organizational effectiveness. Most employees find it difficult to strike a balance between their personal lives and their work obligations. Work-life balance is linked to the stability between the time and effort employees devote to work and also attend personal responsibilities to maintain an overall sense of synchronization in life. State corporations such as Geothermal Development Company are currently operating in an extremely competitive environment. This demand for more responsiveness and efficiency of employees that is brought about by Work-life balance as adopted in private organizations. The main objective of this study was to investigate the influence of work-centred life and employee performance at Geothermal Development Company. The anchor theory of the study was Spill-over Theory that was reinforced by Compensation Theory. The study adopted a descriptive research design. Data was collected using structured questionnaires from the senior management, middle management, and lower-level support staffs of Geothermal Development Company. The target population of the study was 341 and the study’s sample size was 102. The study used stratified random sampling. The researcher conducted a pilot study using 10% of the respondents before the questionnaires were distributed for data collection. Pre-testing and expert opinion were used to examine the instrument's validity. The instrument's dependability was tested using the Cronbach’s alpha reliability test. The qualitative data was analyzed with the aid of SPSS version 26.0. Inferential statistics (correlations and regression analysis) was used by the researcher to show the relationship between independent and dependent variables. Pearson correlation helped in envisaging and defining the relationship between the variables. Data was presented on tables and figures. The study concluded that work-centered life had significant influence on employee performance. The researcher recommends that the management of GDC should enhance their policies on work-centred life by formulation and implementation of modern policies, and this should be cascaded down to departmental level. AbstractIntroductionAn overview of the requirements for the head of a surgical department in Germany should be given.Materials and methodsA retrospective literature research on surgical professional policy publications of the last 10 years in Germany was conducted.ResultsSurveys show that commercial influences on medical decisions in German hospitals have today become an everyday, predominantly negative, actuality. Nevertheless, in one survey, 82.9% of surgical chief physicians reported being very satisfied with their profession, compared with 61.5% of senior physicians and only 43.4% of hospital specialists. Here, the chief physician is challenged. Only 70% of those surveyed stated that they could rely on their direct superiors when difficulties arose at work, and only 34.1% regarded feedback on the quality of their work as sufficient. The high distress rate in surgery (58.2% for all respondents) has led to a lack in desirability and is reflected in a shortage of qualified applicants for resident positions. In various position papers, surgical residents (only 35% describe their working conditions as good) demand improved working conditions. Chief physicians are being asked to facilitate a suitable work-life balance with regular working hours and a corporate culture with participative management and collegial cooperation. Appreciation of employee performance must also be expressed. An essential factor contributing to dissatisfaction is that residents fill a large part of their daily working hours with non-physician tasks. In surveys, 70% of respondents stated that they spend up to ≥3 h a day on documentation and secretarial work.DiscussionThe chief physician is expected to relieve his medical staff by employing non-physician assistants to take care of non-physician tasks. Transparent and clearly structured training to achieve specialist status is essential. It has been shown that a balanced work-life balance can be achieved for surgeons. Family and career can be reconciled in appropriately organized departments by making use of part-time and shift models that exclude 24-h shifts and making working hours more flexible.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyse the relationship between the participation of women in companies with financial performance. However, this relationship does not arise directly. The authors argue that the participation of women in the company’s staff has a positive effect on the creation of work-life balance (WLB) practices, due to women have traditionally assumed family responsibilities, and subsequently these practices positively affect financial performance. WLB practices are a tool to balance employees’ professional and personal goals.Design/methodology/approachThis study aims to determine whether WLB practices mediate in the relationship between female participation in the workforce and financial performance on large companies listed in the Spanish Stock Exchange Index during the period from 2008 to 2013.FindingsThe main finding is that female participation in the workforce positively affects to the availability of WLB practices, but WLB practices are not a mediator to increase financial performance.Originality/valueThe study is a new contribution for academics and practitioners, since the WLB has a role of moderating variable; and the positive joint effect of female participation and WLB practices is tested over the company’s outcomes, instead of over the individual employee behaviour like in previous literature. In addition, this effect is studied in a country with economic recession where corporate WLB practices have increased in the last decade.
