“Cold case” is an unsolved major crime (mainly homicide or abduction), which, after long time, can be re-examined by using modern technologies for their investigation. Unsolved homicides are typical examples of “cold case”. Many crime news’ cases (either recent or past) have undergone new examinations, with the support of forensic science. In some cases, these new activities have led to crimes’ solution. To face this new need, both “Carabinieri” and “Polizia di Stato” have established recently specific units as part of their own Criminal Investigation Department.

This chapter is concerned with the place of forensic science in cold case reviews and the differences in its positioning when comparing cold case murders and cold case stranger rape reviews. It will be suggested in this chapter that there is a reliance on science in cold case reviews but this reliance is not without issue. However, it is a good place to start an investigation, especially in sexually motivated offences, when it can identify a previously unknown offender, link crimes, or open new investigative lines of enquiry to implicate or eliminate offenders. The issues inherent with relying on forensic science in cold case reviews will also be made clear.

Conventional methods employed to teach chemistry imply a lot of memorization and very little contextualization, i.e., they fail to connect chemistry concepts to students’ everyday lives, which causes them to lose motivation and interest in learning the subject. In order to change this scenario, new methods have been proposed for the teaching of chemistry, such as playful experimentation, to foster contextualization of content and integration with content from other subjects. This study has aimed to evaluate student learning of chemistry concepts by means of experimentation associated to forensic science. To this end, first, students’ previous knowledge of the content was assessed by means of a questionnaire prior to the intervention. Then, they were given a problem-situation, a fictitious crime, which they had to solve. The results indicate that the teaching method under investigation is an effective teaching-learning strategy capable of contextualizing and adapting chemistry concepts to students’ cultural background, since TV crime series have become hugely popular among teenagers.

This chapter deals with the knowledge provincials had, and the use they made, of Roman criminal procedure in the provinces of Asia Minor during the imperial period. This will be examined through two main categories of evidence: (1) petitions to emperors complaining about Roman soldiers or functionaries’ abuses against local population, (2) funerary inscriptions including provisions claiming that fines should be paid to the imperial treasury in case of desecration. This evidence supports the view that (unlike part of scholarship has been assuming for a long time) Roman criminal procedure still included accusatorial features under the Principate and that a formal accusation was needed for a proper criminal investigation to be launched. It is argued that provincials were deeply aware of what Roman criminal law was and could explicitly refer to some specific provisions in order to defend their own interests and even to challenge decisions made by the Roman administration.

This work presents an analysis of the case of Toronto’s serial killer Bruce MacArthur, focusing on identifying a common factor among the cases of the most worldwide known series assassins. That is, what would be the main difficulty in investigating and holding those involved more quickly, from the perspective of the thesis of stigmas as second code. A comparison among these serial killers was made, confirming that common rules related to stigmas in fact interfere in the criminal responsibility of the person involved in serious crimes, in a way that if the person has no stigma, he/she has little visibility to criminal investigation and accountability, although strong evidences that he/she may have committed homicides are present. In the end, I present some suggestions in order to avoid the interference of stigmas such as negative second codes.

This study will examine the links between the historical case of Jack the Ripper, the history of forensic science, and the advancement of policing for the Metropolitan Police and forensic in Victorian Britain. Ripper’s crimes were committed in a ‘pre-forensic science’ period, when there were no fingerprints, DNA, or crime scene investigation units to help Detectives capture sophisticated criminals, but through this case forensic science and the Metropolitan Police Force would develop into a more modern form of policing. Jack the Ripper can be considered the prototype of the definition of a serial killer, and his crimes were of a nature that police had little experience with, which meant the police force would have to develop new techniques in criminal investigation. This study will examine the early history of the Metropolitan Police, how the young police force—less than sixty years old by the first murder of Jack the Ripper—was organized, the tools available for investigating murders, how the case of Jack the Ripper led to advancements in criminal investigation and how these new techniques were used to solve other crimes. The Metropolitan Police and British pathologists—such as Dr. Bernard Spilsbury— developed new ways of catching criminals because of the Jack the Ripper case, such as crime scene preservation, profiling and the use of photography to capture crime scenes that would be used to solve the case of Dr. Crippen in 1910 and the Bathtub Murders in 1915.

Japan has maintained a very low crime rate and a correspondingly high clearance rate for a long time, but recently the circumstances surrounding criminal investigation have been changing remarkably. In order to compare criminal investigations among the developed countries, it will be very informative to consider the situation in Japan. This article gives a brief introduction to the conditions for, and characteristics of, police criminal investigations in Japan. The first part explains the background to investigations, for example limited legal competence, the cooperative attitude of citizens and changing circumstances in recent times (the increase in the number of offences, new demands from the public and victim support). In the second part, the characteristics of police criminal investigations are noted, that is organised investigations, forensic investigations and countermeasures under the new criminal situation.

Insulation systems for buildings and structures imply the use of efficient thermal insulation products based on mineral wool, expanded polystyrene, expanded polyurethane, etc. For a long time, products from non-cross-linked expanded polyethylene were used as insulation for pipelines, reflective insulation, protection against air infiltration, etc. Modern technologies and engineering solutions allowed widening the field of application of non-cross-linked expanded polyethylene (NXLPE) as a construction insulation material. In particular, we can consider a complex of insulation systems for walls, floors and a pitched roof, which allows to form a fully insulating shell of a low-rise building, e.g. a cottage. The novelty of the patented technology Tepofol® and that of the material concerned in comparison with the known solutions is the development of a rolled material based on NXLPE (20 to 150 mm thick) with a lock joint, as well as the technology of seamless connection of individual heat-insulating cloths. The rolls of NXLPE are mechanically fixed to the frame and connected with the lock. One of the advantages of expanded polyethylene, which only few insulating materials possess, is the possibility of forming seamless insulating shells. The article considers a number of insulation systems based on the use of products from expanded polyethylene. In particular, these are the systems of insulation of the walls of frame buildings, the insulation of floors, as well as the insulation of logistics facilities and hangars.
