OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of magnification and superimposition of structures on CBCT-generated lateral cephalometric radiographs (LCR) using different segments of the cranium. METHODS: CBCT scans of 10 patients were selected. Four LCR were generated using Dolphin Imaging(r) software: full-face, right side, left side and center of the head. A total of 40 images were imported into Radiocef Studio 2(r), and the angles of the most common cephalometric analyses were traced by the same observer twice and within a 10-day interval. Statistical analyses included intraexaminer agreement and comparison between methods by means of intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman agreement tests. RESULTS: Intraexaminer agreement of the angles assessed by ICC was excellent (> 0.90) for 83% of measurements, good (between 0.75 and 0.90) for 15%, and moderate (between 0.50 and 0.75) for 2% of measurements. The comparison between methods by ICC was excellent for 68% of measurements, good for 26%, and moderate for 6%. Variables presenting wider confidence intervals (> 6o) in the Bland-Altman tests, in intraexaminer assessment, were: mandibular incisor angle, maxillary incisor angle, and occlusal plane angle. And in comparison methods the variables with wider confidence interval were: mandibular incisor, maxillary incisor, GoGn, occlusal plane angle, Frankfort horizontal plane (FHP), and CoA. CONCLUSION: Superimposition of structures seemed to influence the results more than magnification, and neither one of them significantly influenced the measurements. Considerable individual variability may occur, especially for mandibular and maxillary incisors, FHP and occlusal plane.

Orientation of occlusal plane for complete dentures play a vital role as it affects all the basic requirements of complete dentures. Depending on soft tissue landmarks for orienting occlusal plane seems to be unreliable. Cephalometrics were introduced in Prosthodontics to orient the occlusal plane in the same position as it was with the lost natural teeth. In the present study, 60 lateral cephalometric radiographs of a group of male and female dentulous subjects of Indian and Nepali origin (30 subjects in each group) were obtained and tracings were made. All the subjects selected were in the age group of 20-30 years in whom the facial growth was completed. Angular measurements were made between FH (Frankfort Horizontal plane)- CP (Camper's Plane), FH-OP (Occlusal Plane) and CP-OP and subjected to statistical analysis to determine the degree of separation between these planes in Indian and Nepalese ethnic groups. The absolute parallelism between the natural occlusal plane and Camper's plane were not proven in both Indian and Nepalese subjects involved in this study. This significantly reduces the reference values of these planes in Prosthodontics.

Introduction: The angle between Frankfort horizontal (FH) plane and Sella-Nasion (SN) plane is considered to be 7°. Various studies have shown that the FH-SN angulations could vary; which can affect cephalometric diagnosis.Objective: To determine average FH-SN angle for a group of Nepalese orthodontic patients. The secondary objectives were to assess whether the FH-SN angle exhibits sexual dimorphism and to evaluate the FH-SN angle in different skeletal relationships.Materials & Method: Lateral cephalograms of 238 orthodontic patients were hand traced and the angle between the FH and SN plane was measured and recorded. The cephalograms were also classified as skeletal Class I, II or III cases using Wits appraisal.Result: The average FH-SN angle was 6.71° ± 3.13°. FH-SN angle was greater in female samples compared to males. However, the difference was not statistically significant. Similarly, the ANOVA analysis revealed no significant difference between FH-SN angles in different skeletal relationships.Conclusion: The average FH-SN angle for a group of Nepalese orthodontic patients was 6.71° ± 3.13°. There was no statistically significant difference in FH-SN angle between skeletal Class I, II and III relationships

Introduction: Use of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in orthodontics is increasing; however, some patients started treatment with conventional images. The objective of this study is to manipulate CBCT panoramic reconstruction to make it comparable to conventional panoramic image and to compare mesiodistal root angulations on both images. Materials and Methods: Concurrent conventional panoramics and CBCT volumes were obtained from 40 subjects. CBCT volumes were manipulated to generate pan-like images that mimic the occlusal plane angle of the corresponding panoramic, allowing comparison of mesiodistal root angulations and determination of the head-tilt required to produce the reconstruction. Results: Clinically meaningful differences (p < .05) in the mesiodistal root angulations between standard panoramics and CBCT reconstructions emerged for 13 out of 24 teeth (54%). Greatest variations were seen in the maxillary and mandibular sextants and in first molar regions. Ideal axial head-tilt for image acquisition was determined to be with Frankfort horizontal plane 3.3o nose down. Conclusion: CBCT pan images must be used with caution due to variation between methods in specific areas of arches. The images can be useful for the assessment of mesiodistal root angulations if the volume is properly manipulated to create a pan-like image.
