Macrophytes are plant organisms that live partially or totally submerged in water, being fixed and free. The Doce River is one of the main rivers in southeastern Brazil and, in 2015, it was hit by ore tailings from the Fundão dam burst in Mariana, Minas Gerais. This work aims to provide a floristic survey of macrophytes in the lower Doce River basin and to compare the species composition between lentic and lotic environments. Expeditions were carried out monthly from October 2018 to September 2019, in five stations in lotic and six in lentic environments. A total of 105 species belonging to 33 families of vascular plants were recorded, among them 14 are new occurrences for Espírito Santo state. Richest families were Poaceae (23 spp.) and Cyperaceae (22 spp.). Amphibious/emerging plants were the most representative (46 spp.). NMDS analysis revealed that the composition of the lotic and lentic environments are different.

ABSTRACT The present work aims to describe the sampling design and the methods used in the series “Periphytic algal flora of the Lower Doce River basin (Espírito Santo State, Brazil) after ore tailings flow”. This series will present the biodiversity of periphytic algae registered during the Aquatic Biodiversity Monitoring Program, Environmental Area I, carried out in the Lower Doce River basin three years after the passage of the ore tailings from Fundão dam (Mariana, Minas Gerais). Samples from the periphytic community were collected monthly, between October/2018 and February/2020, at five sampling stations in lotic environments and seven in lentic environments of the basin. These samples were fixed and the taxa will be identified and described, following specific methods. These taxa will be presented in sequential fascicles, split according to their taxonomic and morphological classification. More than 900 taxa have been recorded in this survey. This is the first taxonomic study about inland algae carried out in the Lower Doce River basin.

AbstractHerein, we report six new records of bats for the Espírito Santo state, southeastern Brazil: Choeroniscus minor, Diaemus youngii, Micronycteris schmidtorum, Glyphonycteris daviesi, G. sylvestris, and Histiotus velatus. Fieldwork was conducted in the region of Reserva Biológica de Sooretama, northern Espírito Santo, increasing to 83 species the total of bat species known for the state. We also assigned the first voucher for Diclidurus albus at Espírito Santo, and we provide distributional information about all these species in Brazil and map their distribution in the Neotropics. These new occurrences increase the range, in Atlantic Forest, for all bat species reported here. We describe species measurements and provide comments on taxonomy for comparisons and to aid correct identification.

During a floristic survey of Araceae species in the Atlantic Forest, Espírito Santo State, southeastern Brazil, we found an unknown species of Anthurium Schott with cordate leaf bases. Here, we describe and illustrate this new species, A. marcusianum Theófilo, L. Kollmann & Sakur., and also provide comments on its ecology, distribution, and conservation status.

Abstract—A new species of Dalechampia from southeastern Brazil, belonging to Dalechampia sect. Dioscoreifoliae, is described and illustrated here. Dalechampia margarethiae is a twining vine occurring exclusively in Espírito Santo state. Its pseudanthia are similar to those of D. peckoltiana and D. pentaphylla, but D. margarethiae differs in a set of important characters, including having cylindrical, down-curved style tips, staminate flowers at anthesis having unreflexed sepals with stamens born on unelongated columns, whitish floral resin, and simple, entire, cordate leaves.

We describe a new species of dull-colored flea-toad, genus Brachycephalus, from the Atlantic Forest of Caparaó mountains in southeastern Brazil. The new species is characterized by its diminutive size, “leptodactyliform” body, brownish color with an inverted V-shaped dark mark on dorsum, skin smooth, hyperossification and dorsal shield absent, linea masculinea absent, Fingers I and IV vestigial, Toe I externally absent, Toe II reduced but functional, Toes III and IV with pointed tips, Toe V vestigial, and ventral color uniformly brown. It is a leaf litter dweller, known only from type locality in the humid forests on the eastern slopes of Parque Nacional do Caparaó mountains, a protected area in the states of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. It is the third flea-toad occurring in the state of Espírito Santo recovered as sister to all other Brachycephalus distributed from the state of São Paulo northward in the Atlantic Forest.

A species of Selaginella from Parque Nacional do Caparaó, in Espírito Santo State, southeastern Brazil, is described as new to the science: Selaginella salinoi grows on rocks in Atlantic Rainforest vegetation at ca. 1200 m. The description includes photos of live plants and, scanning electron micrographs.
