This paper provides the results of the study of a spatial flow in a low-flow stage of a SVD-22 centrifugal compressor of computational fluid dynamics methods using the Ansys CFX 14.0 software package. Low flow stages are used as the last stages of multistage centrifugal compressors. Such multistage compressors are widely used in boosting compressor stations for natural gas, in chemical industries. The flow features in low-flow stages require independent research. This is due to the fact that the developed techniques for designing centrifugal compressor stages are created for medium-flow and high-flow stages and do not apply to low-flow stages. Generally at manufacturing new centrifugal compressors, it is impossible to make a control measurement of the parameters of the working process inside the flow path elements. Computational fluid dynamics methods are widely used to overcome this difficulties. However verification and validation of CFD methods are necessary for accurate modeling of the workflow. All calculations were conducted on one of the SPbPU clusters. Parameters of one cluster node: AMD Opteron 280 2 cores, 8GB RAM. The calculations were conducted using 4 nodes (HP MPI Distributed Parallel startup type) with their full load by parallelizing processes on each node.

The paper considers the issue of improving the quality of the numerical experiment in the calculation of viscous gas in the flowing part of a low-flow centrifugal compressor stage. The choice of turbulence model in creating a calculation model for calculations by methods of computational fluid dynamics is substantiated. As object of research is chosen low-flow stage with conditional flow coefficient Ф=0,008 and relative width at impeller outlet b2 /D2 =0,0133. The issue of qualitative modeling of friction losses in low-flow stages is of fundamental importance and is directly related to the choice of turbulence model. It is shown that the choice of low-Reynolds turbulence models in the case of unloaded and discontinuous low-flow stages can be made from the main common models (SpalartAllmaras, SST, k-ω) based on the economy of calculations, speed of convergence, solution stability and adequacy of the obtained results. For models with wall functions, the quality of the mesh model and the observance of the dimensionless distance to the wall y+ throughout the calculation domain are particularly important. For highReynolds turbulence models, at values of y+=25...50 on all friction surfaces of the computational domain in the optimal mode of operation, the grid independence of the solution for the entire gas-dynamic characteristic is ensured. It is unacceptable for y+ to fall into the transition region of 4...15 between the viscous sublayer and the region of the logarithmic velocity profile

Centrifugal compressors have widely applications in industrial gas compression processes. Limitations of installation and compressor package always request to modify the compressor geometry to fit certain constrains. Very often, the modifications of the scroll were performed to meet the space constrains. To meet the installation and package requirements, we always modify the scroll and discharge pipe of the compressors. In this study, an original designed scroll and a modified scroll were analyzed by using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The study is focused on the performance impacts of the scroll local deformation due to installation constrains. The CFD showed favorable agreements with experiments for original scroll. The detailed flow characters and performance impacts were discussed and results showed that current modifications of the scroll did not have significant impacts to the compressor performance. The study results can be used as a basic guidance for a compressor manufactures.

This paper presents an experimental and numerical study of the flow in a 1:1 scale, automotive turbocharger centrifugal compressor. Particle image velocimetry measurements have been carried out in the vaneless diffuser at 50% of the design speed. The challenges involved in taking optical measurements in the current small-scale compressor rig are discussed. The overall stage performance and the measured diffuser flow are compared with the results of steady-state computational fluid dynamics calculations. A good agreement between the computational fluid dynamics and the experimental results demonstrates that the numerical methods are capable of predicting the main flow features within the compressor. The synthesis of measured and predicted data is used to explain the sources of the flow and performance variations across the compressor map, and the differences in loss production between small and large compressors are highlighted.

The article deals with the choice of key geometric parameters and the range of their variation in solving the optimization problem of centrifugal compressor impellers using computational fluid dynamics. The study was carried out using Numeca Fine / Turbo package. The influence of more than 10 geometric parameters on the efficiency and the head of the impeller was considered. The influence degree evaluation of investigated optimization parameters was provide by changing the parameters value in a preset range and analyzing their impact on the efficiency and head of the impeller. As a result, the main geometric parameters of optimization, which should be considered first, were identified. Other parameters may not be considered within the optimization problem, and can be assigned to the standard values. In addition, recommendations on optimal ranges of parameter values were given.

Five objects of research are considered: 1) flow path of an intermediate stage of an average-flow centrifugal compressor; 2) flow path of the low-flow centrifugal compressor stage; 3) a natural gas centrifugal compressor stage; 4) vaned diffuser of the first stage of an industrial multistage centrifugal compressor; 5) adjustable inlet stator of the first stage of an industrial turbocompressors.
