Probability, interpretations of

The term ‘probability’ and its cognates occur frequently in both everyday and philosophical discourse. Unlike many other concepts, it is unprofitable to view ‘probability’ as having a unique meaning. Instead, there exist a number of distinct, albeit related, concepts, of which we here mention five: the classical or equiprobable view, the relative frequency view, the subjectivist or personalist view, the propensity view, and the logical probability view. None of these captures all of our legitimate uses of the term ‘probability’, which range from the clearly subjective, as in our assessment of the likelihood of one football team beating another, through the inferential, as when one set of sentences lends a degree of inductive support to another sentence, to the obviously objective, as in the physical chance of a radioactive atom decaying in the next minute. It is often said that what all these interpretations have in common is that they are all described by the same simple mathematical theory – ‘the theory of probability’ to be found in most elementary probability textbooks – and it has traditionally been the task of any interpretation to conform to that theory. But this saying does not hold up under closer examination, and it is better to consider each approach as dealing with a separate subject matter, the structure of which determines the structure of the appropriate calculus.

The quadratic function offers some unusual opportunities to assemble several segments of mathematical theory chosen from algebra, analytic geometry, and set theory. The exploitation of these opportunities invariably arouses the interest of students in any mathematics class having the proper background, and gives them an elegant vignette of the unity of subject matter in mathematics.

Opening ParagraphWherever native courts have been established and maintain W records of their proceedings, there is available a mass of material concerning native law and custom which, properly regarded, may be of great value to the ethnographer as well as to the administrator. In Tanganyika Territory, from one portion of which the material for the present paper is derived, the making of elaborate records of evidence and judgements is deprecated at the present stage of development, as likely to interfere with the smooth working of the courts. A minimum is required of the names of parties, a brief statement of the subject-matter, and a short judgement signed by the holder of the court, be he chief, headman, or chairman of a council. Under such circumstances, a study of records will show, at the least, the types of social maladjustment which bring people to court, with the relative frequency of different kinds of case: the manner in which different types of case are viewed by the court, whether as offences against society or as affecting only families or individuals: and probably some general indication of the tone of the society. From this type of record there will be an upward range to the most valuable of all for the student, those containing a precis of evidence and a full reasoned judgement.

Bulgarian Interwar Interpreters of FreudThis article aims at analysing views of the so-called “orthodox” Bulgarian psychoanalysts. The discussed subject-matter is used to infer a set of intellectual trends that influenced the formation of the interwar period anthropological and philosophical discourse that centred around the categories of the body, sexuality, gender and femininity. The analysis of the selected research material is intended to provide context for and a source of understanding of certain complex interwar projects of religious and philosophical character.

I wanted to call this article, Counting permutations that contain a specified number of cycles of a given length but the Editor pointed out the problems this might cause the Production Editor - it simply wouldn't fit the running head. Hence the chosen title and the subject matter. There is a very well known result, nonetheless startling, about the relative frequency of derangements amongst the permutations of [r] = {1,2,3,… , r }.

THE germ of that which follows came into being many years ago in the days of my youth as a university instructor and assistant professor. It was generated by the then quite outspoken attitude of colleagues in the “exact sciences”; the sciences of which the subject-matter can be exactly weighed and measured and the force of its movements mathematically demonstrated. They assured us that the study of languages and literature had little or nothing scientific about it because: “It had no domain of concrete fact in which to work.” Ergo, the scientific spirit was theirs by a stroke of “efficacious grace” as it were. Ours was at best only a kind of “sufficient grace,” pleasant and even necessary to have, but which could, by no means ensure a reception among the elected.
