Philo of Alexandria can hardly be called a philosopher, especially given a certain speculative or systematic philosophy. But also, contrary to the prevailing opinion in contemporary research, it could hardly be defined as an exegete, especially given the modern content of the term. At the same time, the impression remains that the most often associated concept with his name – allegory (allegorical interpretation) is usually perceived too narrowly, and not enough attention is paid to the actual literary and hermeneutical skills of the author. Modern translations of his works often do not reflect the symbolism used by Philo at all, as is the case with music imagery in the opening paragraph of De Posteritate Caini. The musical theme and symbolism in Philo's work undoubtedly deserve a special and thorough study, which would go far beyond the scope of this article.

This paper argues that as a play text, “John Duffy’s Brother” invites two simultaneous readings: that of the primary mimetic narrative, and of a performative metadiscourse through which the protagonist’s metamorphosis into a train may be interpreted as a critique of the absurdity of fictionalisation. The paper develops an idea of reader activation in which the reader participates in the world- and text-making processes of mimesis and performance, before demonstrating how the text creates and undermines mimetic expectations. In doing so, the text ‘casually’ creates ‘embarrassments,’ inviting the reader to adopt a meta-attitude towards what the narrative is doing. Beginning with the frame-breaking strategy of the story’s paradoxical opening, the first part of this paper outlines Wolfgang Iser’s concept of text play, and defines the unconventional nature of the story’s “textual schema”: the non-mimetic elements of the text that create the “tilting game” through which the text may be read two ways simultaneously. Using Sue Asbee’s analysis of the text’s opening paragraph as the point of departure, I draw a parallel with Samuel Beckett’s “Imagination Dead Imagine,” to demonstrate the foregrounding of the untenability of regular mimesis. The tonal difference between these two texts is also highlighted, leading to a discussion of the importance of the narrator’s ‘casual,’ co-conspiratorial voice, and how the “gesture towards anecdote” (to use Asbee’s phrase) contributes to the ludic openness of the text. This section also explores the importance of the playful presupposition that the text exists within the fictive world of the text. I then argue that the reader then encounters a series of narratological flourishes that sustain the text’s self-referentiality. Whereas most critics seeking a Joycean parallel have focused on the overt influence of “A Painful Case,” this paper looks to Margot Norris’s analysis of “The Sisters” to illuminate the function of Duffy’s spyglass, interpreting it as a “hermeneutic signal” which serves to sustain and alter the textual schema, and which draws the eye of the reader and the eye of Duffy parallel in a game of suspicious sign reading. We then see how those elements that frustrate the traditional narrative are sustenance for our ‘embarrassed’ reading, and for potential play. The final section of this paper identifies a potential mise-en-abyme within the text, which equates mimesis with madness and suggests that the metamorphosis may be the consequence of over-interpretive sign-reading; an imagination gone off the rails. Thus the function of the metamorphosis is to remind us that, as the opening paragraph warns, the fictionalising act in which we are engaged is “absurd.” As the narrator alternates between the protagonist’s human and trainlike aspects, the urge to draw a correspondence between the strange episode and our dual reading of the text is shown to be irresistible. The paper concludes by noting the importance of the story’s casual narrative voice in differentiating O’Brien from his contemporaries, resulting in a text which, to quote Neil Murphy and Keith Hopper, is “a garden in which all of us may play."

Abstract In this article I claim there is no contradiction involved in Franz Rosenzweig’s love of life and his apology for death: what he loves and wants us to love is the finite life, life offered in its finitude which should in the end appear as enough – that is, sufficient and fit for everything we could want from life, redemption included. The beyond toward which death as the end gestures is not a promise of immortality, offering a transcendence in temporal terms infinitely prolonged. The will “to stay, to live,” of which Rosenzweig speaks in the opening paragraph of The Star of Redemption, is the drive characteristic of another finitude: desiring and investing in life, without, at the same time, wishing to prolong itself into infinity.

The basic principles of the implementation of Indonesian foreign policy have been stated in the opening paragraph of the first paragraph of the 1945 Constitution, "that actual independence is the right of all nations. And therefore, colonization of the world must be abolished, because it is not in accordance with humanity and justice. The establishment of this country is to "participate in carrying out world order based on freedom, eternal peace, and social justice". The Indonesian people in carrying out the constitutional mandate is to help other countries affected by the disaster. The assistance is given to other countries without any regulations which are the basis for the government to pay for the assistance. The provision of humanitarian assistance to other countries by the Indonesian government has created a dilemma among officials who have the authority to issue the budget. On the one hand, the President's order must be implemented, on the other side spending the budget for humanitarian assistance to other countries affected by the disaster there are no regulations that regulate it.

“Sapere aude! Have the courage to use your own reason! is therefore the motto of the Enlightenment.” With these words, Kant draws the opening paragraph of his famous text An Answer to the Question: What Is Enlightenment? to a close.1 The essay was an intervention in an ongoing debate about the precise meaning of enlightenment, at a moment when the notion began to pick up speed in intellectual discourses of the time. The debate was initially sparked by the theologian and educational reformer Johann Friedrich Zöllner who in the December 1783 edition of the Berlinische Monatschrift critically observed that “under the name of enlightenment the hearts and minds of men are bewildered,” while raising the very question “What is enlightenment?” in a footnote to the text.2 Within a year the journal had published the responses by Kant and Moses Mendelssohn and soon after many other writers started to contribute to the discussion. The author of an anonymous article published in 1790 remarked that the debate had turned into “a war of all against all” in which several intellectuals tried to lay claim on the precise meaning of enlightenment, and the author went on to distinguish twenty-one interpretations that the concept had already received.3 Even today, philosophers continue to reinterpret the notion of enlightenment, imbuing it with a new meaning every time.4

The topic of this Article arose from a recent opinion by the North Dakota Supreme Court: Western Energy Corporation v. Stauffer. The case dealt with how the law handles changes in ownership of property, specifically land including underlying mineral interests, that come into dispute after substantial periods of time have passed, resulting in a need for the parties involved in the dispute to turn to the courts for a solution. The passing of a substantial amount of time often becomes the issue in resolving the dispute in these types of situations. The opening paragraph in the Court’s opinion in Western Energy states that “Western Energy appealed from a district court judgment finding its quiet title action pertaining to claimed mineral interests to be barred by applicable statutes of limitation and laches.” Statutes of limitation are fairly straightforward and are discussed below as they are the determinative factor in the case. However, the specific goal here is to examine several of the approaches that can be taken in this kind of situation and how the issue is ultimately resolved. Raising the claim of “laches” is a rather vague concept, but it appears in some of these cases and has an interesting background, as discussed in the last part of this Article. The background of the case in question will be laid out first followed by the discussion of several traditional methodologies for resolving cases of this kind, generally, in the context of other court cases.

[opening paragraph] Human communication is composite (e.g., Clark 2016; Enfield 2009; Ferrara and Hodge 2018; Holler and Levinson 2019). It involves the voice, face, hands, and rest of the body. It integrates categorical elements and gradient ones; highly conventional and ad hoc forms; arbitrary symbols and motivated signals. This is true of spoken communication and it is true—in equal measure—of signed communication. Both speakers and signers stitch these different types of components into a seamless whole. Some of these components are historically considered a core part of language, others marginal, and still others are thought to be something else entirely—gestural, expressive, paralinguistic (for discussion, see, e.g., Dingemanse 2018; Goldin-Meadow and Brentari 2017; Müller 2018). Regardless of whether one considers the language/ non-language divide fundamental, fuzzy, or fictitious, there is widespread agreement that certain communicative phenomena haunt the boundaries in ways that prove revealing. Chief among these are cases where both speakers and signers make use of the same bodily raw material, but in putatively very different ways: flashes and furrows of the brow; imitations of actions; depictions of size, shape, and arrangement. Here, we analyze one of these similar- looking forms in detail: pointing. The case of pointing shows, first, how a single semiotic tool can be put to many uses and, second, how speakers and signers use this tool in some ways that are similar and other ways that are different.

Opening Paragraph (serves as abstract for submission) and BodyThe Intact Proviral DNA Assay (IPDA) was developed to address the critical need for a precise and scalable method for intact HIV reservoir quantification1. This duplexed droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) assay simultaneously targets the HIV Packaging Signal (Ψ) and the Rev Responsive Element (RRE) within Envelope (env) to distinguish genomically intact proviruses against a large background of defective ones2. The IPDA requires less time, resources, and biological material than the gold standard for replication-competent HIV reservoir measurement, the Quantitative Viral Outgrowth Assay (QVOA)3, and is being adopted in research and clinical studies4–7. In our cohort of HIV-1 subtype B-infected individuals from North America however, the IPDA yielded a 28% failure rate due to HIV polymorphism. We further demonstrate that within-host HIV diversity can lead the IPDA to underestimate intact HIV reservoir size, which could negatively impact clinical trial results interpretation. While the IPDA represents an important methodological advance, HIV diversity should be addressed before its widespread adoption.
