Background As interest in gender and health grows, the notion that women are more likely than men to consult doctors is increasingly undermined as more complex understandings of help seeking and gender emerge. While men’s reluctance to seek help is associated with practices of masculinities, there has been less consideration of women’s help-seeking practices. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic disease that predominantly affects women and requires prompt treatment but considerable patient-based delays persist along the care pathway. This paper examines women’s accounts of help seeking in early RA from symptom onset to diagnosis. Methods We conducted in-depth interviews with 37 women with RA <12 months in Canada. Analysis was based on a constant comparison, thematic approach informed by narrative analysis. Results The women’s accounts featured masculine practices associated with men’s help-seeking. The women presented such behaviours as relational, e.g. rooted in family socialisation and a determination to maintain roles and ‘normal’ life. Discussion Our findings raise questions about how far notions of gender operate to differentiate men and women’s help seeking and may indicate more similarities than differences. Recognising this has implications for policy and practice initiatives for both men and women.

RESUMOObjetivo: analisar a produção de conhecimento acerca da categoria de gênero nas teses de doutorado dos Programas de Pós-Graduação em Enfermagem no Brasil. Método: trata-se de revisão integrativa, referente ao período de janeiro/2001 a dezembro/2017, na qual foram utilizados os bancos de teses de Pós-Graduação em Enfermagem do Brasil, com os critérios nota Capes ≥ 4; título, resumo ou palavras-chave gênero ou gênero e saúde e disponibilidade on-line e na íntegra nos bancos de teses dos Programas de Pós-Graduação. Resultados: analisaram-se 28 teses de doutorado que atenderam aos critérios de inclusão. De acordo com os resultados e considerando a região onde funcionam os Programas de Pós-Graduação em Enfermagem que discutem gênero, 15 teses (53,57%) foram publicadas na região Sudeste, nove (32,14%) na região Nordeste e quatro (14,28%) na região Sul. As temáticas discutidas englobaram gênero e adoecimento crônico, com oito produções (28,57%); gênero e demandas de saúde, com oito (28,57%) e vulnerabilidade e gênero, com 12 (42,85%). Conclusão: revela-se, pelas teses analisadas neste estudo, a importância do conhecimento de Enfermagem acerca das questões associadas à categoria de gênero e suas devidas implicações à saúde cooperando para a qualidade do cuidado. The word we evokes ideas of both belongingness and non-belongingness through its ability to create constellations of solidarity and exclusion. In education, its use has the power to draw invisible yet substantial lines between dominant and counter-hegemonic ideologies—and teachers and students—in ways that dynamically influence the operation of power between actors. Reflections emerging from a collaborative partnership between a student, teaching assistants, and professor during an undergraduate course on sex/gender and health revealed significant opportunities for critical pedagogical practice around we. This paper analyzes how we and related terms (like they, us, them, etc.) function in the higher education classroom and offers our analysis into the possibilities of using we as a starting point for anti-oppressive and reflexive educational praxis. Ultimately, we contend that we has the potential to work as an intervention countering dominant ideologies and normative assumptions operating in the classroom.
