Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is defined by deficits in social communication and interaction, and restricted and repetitive behaviors and interests. Although current diagnostic conceptualizations of ASD do not include emotional difficulties as core deficits, the disorder is associated with emotion dysregulation across the lifespan, with considerable implications for long-term psychological, social, and educational outcomes. The overarching goal of this chapter is to integrate existing knowledge of emotion dysregulation in ASD and identify areas for further investigation. The chapter reviews the prevalence and expressions of emotion dysregulation in ASD, discusses emerging theoretical models that frame emotion dysregulation as an inherent (rather than associated) feature of ASD, presents neurobiological findings and mechanisms related to emotion dysregulation in ASD, and identifies continuing controversies and resulting research priorities.

Research-practice partnerships (RPPs) offer promising approaches to improve educational outcomes. Navigating boundaries between contexts is essential for RPP effectiveness, yet much work remains to establish a conceptual framework of boundary spanning in partnerships. Our longitudinal comparative case study draws from our experiences as graduate student boundary spanners in three long-term partnerships to examine boundary spanning roles in RPPs, with particular attention to the ways in which power permeates partnership work. Using qualitative, critically reflexive analysis of meeting artifacts and field notes, we found that our boundary spanning roles varied along five spectrums: institutional focus, task orientation, expertise, partnership disposition, and agency. Our roles were shaped by the organizational, cultural, relational, and historical features of the partnerships and contexts of interaction. We aim to promote the development of effective RPP strategies by leveraging the perspectives and positionality of graduate students in order to advance understanding of boundary spanning roles.

Every year, over 20,000 Hispanics enlist in the U.S. military. Their military experiences influence their long-term educational outcomes. This exploratory study estimates the effect of military service on education level completed by men up to 15 years after initial enlistment. Findings suggest that technical military jobs, more than nontechnical military jobs, positively influence the educational outcomes of individuals after military service.

Abstract Background There is little data on the long-term neurocognitive and educational outcomes among school-aged survivors of neonatal jaundice (NNJ) and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in Africa. This study investigates the long-term neurocognitive and educational outcomes and the correlates of these outcomes in school-aged survivors of NNJ or HIE in Kilifi, Kenya. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study on neurocognitive and educational outcomes among school-aged survivors (6–12 years) of NNJ (n = 134) and HIE (n = 107) and compared them to a community comparison group (n = 134). We assessed nonverbal intelligence, planning, working memory, attention, syntax, pragmatics, word-finding, memory, perceptual-motor, mathematical, and reading abilities. We also collected information on medical history, caregivers’ mental health, and family environment. Results The survivors of NNJ had lower mean total scores in word-finding [F (1, 250) = 3.89, p = 0.050] and memory [F (1, 248) = 6.74, p = 0.010] than the comparison group. The survivors of HIE had lower mean scores in pragmatics [F (1, 230) = 6.61, p = 0.011] and higher scores higher scores in non-verbal reasoning [F (1, 225) =4.10, p = 0.044] than the comparison group. Stunted growth was associated with almost all the outcomes in HIE. Conclusion Survivors of NNJ and HIE present with impairment in the multiple domains, which need to be taken into consideration in the planning of educational and rehabilitative services.

9555 Background: Long-term survivors of childhood and adolescent cancers are at risk for late mortality and morbidity. Using database linkages we assessed the extent of these issues and health care utilization in a population based cohort in British Columbia. Methods: Retrospective cohorts of 3,483 survivors (>5 years from diagnosis), and representative comparison groups, have been identified from population-based registries. Linkages were made with administrative databases of risk factors and outcomes. Late mortality, second cancers, late morbidity, health services utilization, continuity of care, and educational outcomes, among those diagnosed before age 20 between 1970 to 1995, and followed to 2000, have been examined. Results: Survivors experienced a 9-fold increase in mortality (SMR 9.1, 95% CI 7.8–10.5). Risk of developing a second cancer was 5 times higher than in the general population (SIR 5.0, 95% CI 3.8–6.5). Survivors had three times the odds of being hospitalized (OR 2.97, 95% CI 2.56–3.45) in a three-year period (1998–2000). Survivors were significantly more likely than the population group to consult any physician (excluding oncologists) (adj. RR 1.61, 95% CI 1.51–1.70). Survivors were found to experience a drop in continuity of primary health care as they aged and transitioned into adult care. Survivors were significantly more likely than their peers to receive special education (32.5% vs. 14.1%), most significantly among CNS survivors who received cranial irradiation. Conclusions: Survivors of childhood and adolescent cancers have severe long term health issues and increased health care utilization. Survivors of CNS tumors were at highest risk of poor health and educational outcomes measured. Data linkage provides useful insights for survivorship research. No significant financial relationships to disclose.
