Air quality in open - pit mines is the big concern relating to the occupational safety and healthy, as well as the surrounding environment. In the past years, management of the air quality in open - pit mines is challenge due to the limit of science and technology in the assessment of the effects of meteorological conditions and toxics in open - pit mines. Therefore, this study assessed the effects of meteorological conditions on the air quality in deep open - pit mines. The air velocity distribution and the dispersal mechanism of the air quality were evaluated at the Coc Sau open - pit coal mine (Vietnam) based on the measured and simulated datasets. Two fixed stations were set up in the ground to monitor the wind direction, wind speed and the temperature to evaluate the stable of the actual ozone layer based on the Pasquill ozone layer. The datasets were also used to analysis and 3D simulate to understand the air pollution mechanism in the Coc Sau open - pit coal mine. On the other hand, the change of the temperature in vertical was measured to determine the to determine the existence of a temperature inversion layer. It is considered as the main reason for the air quality reduction and the natural air circulation in deep open - pit mines. The findings indicated the existence of the temperature inversion layer and they are useful for proposing the artificial ventilation in deep open - pit mine, aiming to improve the air quality in open - pit mines. The 3D simulations also revealed that the high dust and gas concentrations in open - pit mines are due to the stable of the ozone layer.

Blasting is considered as one of the most effective methods for rock fragmentation in open - pit mines. However, its side effects are significant, especially blast - induced ground vibration. Therefore, this study aims to develop and apply artificial intelligence in predicting blast - induced ground vibration in open - pit mines. Indeed, the k - nearest neighbors (KNN) algorithm was taken into account and developed for predicting blast - induced ground vibration at the Deo Nai open - pit coal mine (Vietnam) as a case study. An empirical model (i.e., USBM) was also developed to compare with the developed KNN model aiming to highlight the advantage of the KNN model. Accordingly, 194 blasting events were collected and analyzed for this aim. This database was then divided into two parts, 80% for training and 20% for testing. The MinMax scale and 10 - fold cross - validation techniques were applied to improve the accuracy, as well as avoid overfitting of the KNN model. Root - mean - squared error (RMSE) and determination coefficient (R2) were used as the performance metrics for models’ evaluation and comparison purposes. The results indicated that the KNN model yielded better superior performance than those of the USBM empirical model with an RMSE of 1.157 and R2 of 0.967. In contrast, the USBM model only provided a weak performance with an RMSE of 4.205 and R2 of 0.416. With the obtained results, the KNN can be introduced as a potential artificial intelligence model for predicting and controlling blast - induced ground vibration in practical engineering, especially at the Deo Nai open - pit coal mine.

Chernogosky open pit mine integrates truck-and-shovel system of mining with overburden rehandling to internal dump with a set of walking excavators for rehandling of overburden to mined-out area of the pit. It is possible to improve efficiency of stripping in the conditions of Chernogorsky OPM by reducing percentage of stripping with more expensive handling system. The relevant research and solutions to this effect are presented in this article. Comparative characterization of mining conditions and parameters of mining systems applied is given for open pit mines Chernogorsky, Turnui, Nazarovsky, Vostochno-Beisky and Izykh. The comparative analysis points at the need to account for difficulty of mining and process sites in comparison of equipment productivity. High concentration of mining machines, which is conditioned by narrow mining front and simultaneous operation of five faces, as well as blasting operation implemented every 1-2 days, are recognized as the main constraints of excavator capacity in mining with direct dumping in Chernogorsky open pit mine. The management and engineering solutions implemented in the mine and resulted in higher efficiency of draglines are described.
