Management and engineering solutions to improve stripping equipment efficiency in Chernogorksy open pit mine

Chernogosky open pit mine integrates truck-and-shovel system of mining with overburden rehandling to internal dump with a set of walking excavators for rehandling of overburden to mined-out area of the pit. It is possible to improve efficiency of stripping in the conditions of Chernogorsky OPM by reducing percentage of stripping with more expensive handling system. The relevant research and solutions to this effect are presented in this article. Comparative characterization of mining conditions and parameters of mining systems applied is given for open pit mines Chernogorsky, Turnui, Nazarovsky, Vostochno-Beisky and Izykh. The comparative analysis points at the need to account for difficulty of mining and process sites in comparison of equipment productivity. High concentration of mining machines, which is conditioned by narrow mining front and simultaneous operation of five faces, as well as blasting operation implemented every 1-2 days, are recognized as the main constraints of excavator capacity in mining with direct dumping in Chernogorsky open pit mine. The management and engineering solutions implemented in the mine and resulted in higher efficiency of draglines are described.

As the ecological problems caused by mine development become increasingly prominent, the conflict between mining activity and environmental protection is gradually intensifying. There is an urgent problem regarding how to effectively monitor mineral exploitation activities. In order to automatic identify and dynamically monitor open-pit mines of Hubei Province, an open-pit mine extraction model based on Improved Mask R-CNN (Region Convolutional Neural Network) and Transfer learning (IMRT) is proposed, a set of multi-source open-pit mine sample databases consisting of Gaofen-1, Gaofen-2 and Google Earth satellite images with a resolution of two meters is constructed, and an automatic batch production process of open-pit mine targets is designed. In this paper, pixel-based evaluation indexes and object-based evaluation indexes are used to compare the recognition effect of IMRT, faster R-CNN, Maximum Likelihood (MLE) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). The IMRT model has the best performance in Pixel Accuracy (PA), Kappa and MissingAlarm, with values of 0.9718, 0.8251 and 0.0862, respectively, which shows that the IMRT model has a better effect on open-pit mine automatic identification, and the results are also used as evaluation units of the environmental damages of the mines. The evaluation results show that level Ⅰ (serious) land occupation and destruction of key mining areas account for 34.62%, and 36.2% of topographical landscape damage approached level I. This study has great practical significance in terms of realizing the coordinated development of mines and ecological environments.

AbstractIn light of the complex and dynamic mechanical properties of evolving weak strata in open-pit mines, and the consequent difficulty of determining their mechanical parameters, this study uses the ultimate balance theory, along with the back analysis method combined with monitoring data on field displacement, to carry out parameter inversion using the FLAC3D numerical simulation software. The edge slope of a working pit of the Weijiamao open-pit mine was used as research object to this end. As the results obtained by the constitutive model were consistent with the field monitoring data, the evolving weak strata in the slope and the position of the landslide in the mine could be obtained. The landslide was directed northeast. The mechanism of the edge slope of the working pit was identified as unloading shear failure, and the feasibility of the method of parameter inversion was verified. The internal friction angle ϕ and cohesion C of evolving weak strata in the slope of the open-pit mine were also obtained, where this compensated for the deficiency of laboratory tests and enabled the transformation from qualitative to quantitative analysis. This can provide a reliable basis for the safe operation of open-pit mines.

Hydraulic excavators currently used at open pit mines, in particular backhoes, are more maneuverable, mobile and have more digging capabilities than rope shovels. This makes them suitable for a variety of conditions: top and bottom digging, loading lower, higher and at the standing level. The variants of mutual arrangement of the excavator and the dump truck, respectively, affect the duration of the excavator cycle, which, in turn, directly affects the productivity of the excavator. This article evaluates changes in the productivity of an excavator, depending on its angle of rotation and options for digging and loading. It is determined that the smaller the swing angle of an excavator, the greater its impact on productivity. Based on the executed calculations relative decrease in productivity (in percent from the most optimum variant) is established. Results of work can be used at planning of open pit mining for the purpose of definition, for example, speed of mining front movement at change of parameters of an excavator face and a type of a digging and loading.

Vibrations induced by traffic are of concern for the slope stability of the open-pit mine. Different solutions to mitigate this phenomenon are under investigation. In the field of pavement engineering, the so-called antivibration paving technologies are under investigation in order to avoid the generation of excessive vibration and contains propagation. To more fully examine the effectiveness and potential of the antivibration pavement in the application of vibration absorbing for the open-pit mines, numerical simulations based on a two-dimensional (2D) finite element (FE) model were conducted. Sensitivity analysis of varying monitored points and varying loads are performed. Several important parameters such as the damping layer position and thickness and damping ratio are evaluated as well. By using this FE simulation to model the vibration response induced by traffic, the costly construction mistakes and field experimentation can be avoided.

In this paper, a new geographic information systems (GIS)-based algorithm is proposed for supporting the initial design of a wireless communications system in open-pit mines. In this algorithm, multiple candidate transmitter (wireless access point) locations are selected considering the probability of further development and environmental factors in the mine. Then, a three-dimensional (3D) partial Fresnel zone between the transmitter and the receiver is defined and its 3D Fresnel index calculated by communication viewshed analysis of topographic data. The initial design for a transmitter layout is then determined based on the 3D Fresnel indices, which are calculated for all candidate transmitter locations. The proposed algorithm was applied to an open-pit mine located in Samcheok-si, Gangwon-do, South Korea. The 3D Fresnel indices were calculated for 15 candidate transmitter locations, and an initial transmitter layout then designed considering favorable combinations of two, three, and four transmitters. The proposed algorithm provided more precise Fresnel index overlay maps for the favorable transmitter candidate combinations than other algorithms based on line-of-sight and two-dimensional partial Fresnel zone analyses. Application of the algorithm to an open-pit mine where a wireless communications system is already installed revealed that the initial transmitter layout design is acceptable in terms of providing reasonable information on the coverage area of transmitters. Because the proposed algorithm provides an initial transmitter layout that can be modified after field investigations, it can support efficient design of wireless communications systems for use in open-pit mines.

South Sumatra has an established state-own enterprise exploring the Quarry Open Pit Mine. This mining process leaves some abondance open field that has a high potential to install a PV system. The Government has undertaken an initial analysis of 200 hectares of ex-mining land for this purpose. This paper analyzes the potential for PV panels to be installed at PTBA Tanjung Enim Quarry Open Pit Mine. The location of the PV panel in the open pit Quarry for this analysis is at an altitude of +140 m above sea level. Meanwhile, the PTBA Tanah Putih Township housing site where the PV comparison panel is installed is located on the altitude of +100 m above sea level, and within 2.97 km from the mine. PV panels installed in Open Pit mines generate better electricity and efficiency compared to PV panels installed outside the mine (in PTBA Township Housing). The difference of Isc between PV Panel installed in Quarry Open Pit Mine and Township is 0.0075 A. The Iload measured on the Quarry Open Pit Mine PV panel is 0.5478 A higher than the Township PV panel. Meanwhile, Voc measured on Quarry Open Pit Mine PV panel is smaller than Township PV panel, approximately 0.266 V and Vload of Quarry Open Pit Mine PV panel is 0.266 V larger than Township PV panel. The produced power of Quarry Open Pit Mine PV panel is 11.02 W larger than the Township PV panel. From the total value, the average efficiency produced by Quarry Open Pit Mine PV panels is 2.31 % higher than the efficiency produced by Township PV panels. This research shows the possibility and advantage of installing a PV system on a Quarry Open Pit Mine.

Abstract The Bucket Wheel Excavator (BWE) is the main piece of harvesting equipment used in open-pit lignite or brown coal open-pit mines worldwide. Despite the continuous increase in size, productivity and technical sophistication in recent decades, they have not adapted to the changes of operating environment. In this respect, the increasingly frequent occurrence of hard inclusions – in terms of layers, boulders and other forms – has revealed a consistent failure of BWE-s to meet this challenge. This paper, inspired by the research project RFCR-CT-2015-00003-BEWEXMIN „Bucket wheel excavators operating under difficult mining conditions including un-mineable inclusions and geological structures with excessive mining resistance” deals with preliminary considerations and results that aim to contribute to solving this problem.

Accurate road information is crucial for the effective planning and management of open-pit mines. However, the parameters related to the roads in open-pit mines change constantly, and their shapes are often complicated. These factors indicate the difficulties in updating road information in open-pit mines. This study reports a method for updating the road information in open-pit mines using the trajectories of trucks. The method employs an algorithm for compressing trajectory data, an algorithm for extracting new roads, and an algorithm for old-road classification. Data from the Fushun open-pit mine is used to validate this method, and our experiments show that it can identify more than 90% of new roads and the majority of disappearing roads. In addition, we analyze several factors affecting the results obtained using this approach and provide a detailed description of the limitations of this method. Overall, our findings indicate that this is a promising approach to road-information retrieval.
