Abstract The effects of amplitude and phase difference of an earthquake motion on the seismic response of long earth dams were studied. The dam was modeled as a two-dimensional shear beam whereas the seismic input, applied at the base of the dam, assumed various forms to reflect the variation of amplitude and phase of the ground motion. A computer program, based on the finite element method, was developed to compute the dam response to each of the assumed base motions. It was noted that the length-to-height ratio of the dam has a marked effect on the dynamic characteristics of the dam and on its seismic response. It was also found that the dam response can be sensitive to the assumed spatial variation of ground motion along its base.

Based on one 240-meter-high special-shaped RC chimney, the structure’s dynamic performance and elastic-plastic seismic response analysis has been studied in detail. From the analysis, it demonstrates the weak areas in the chimney. The interlayer displacement angle about corresponding performance points under four kinds of loading mode were also acuired, and the response of four loading patterns were analyzed.

As an effective way of passive damping, isolation technology has been widely used in all types of building structures. Currently, for its theoretical analysis, it usually follows the rigid foundation assumption and ignores soil-structure interaction, which results in calculation results distortion in conducting seismic response analysis. In this paper, three-dimensional finite element method is used to establish finite element analysis model of large chassis single-tower base isolation structure which considers and do not consider soil-structure interaction. The calculation results show that: after considering soil-structure interaction, the dynamic characteristics of the isolation structure, and seismic response are subject to varying degrees of impact.
