Abstract A Finite Element Analysis of a rigid sphere contact with a deformable elastic-plastic plat called indentation model is studied. The numerical results are applied on the rough surfaces contact of the GW model. A series of the relationships of the rough surfaces contact parameters are obtained. The contact parameters of the indentation model and the flattening model are compared in detail and the reasons for their differences are analyzed. In the case of single asperity contact, for ω/ωc > 1, the Indentation model reaches the initial plastic yield while the flattening model is ω/ωc = 1. In ω/ωc = 10, the plastic yield reaches the contact surface for the first time, and the corresponding point of ψ = 0.5 the flattening model is relatively earlier in . The contact parameters of rough surface in different plasticity indexes are compared again. On the point of ω/ωc = 6, the contact parameters of the flattening model and the indentation model coincide perfectly. For 0.5 < ψ < 4, the difference between the parameters curves become larger and larger. To the point of ψ = 4, when the distance difference reaches the maximum, it begins to decrease until the two curves are close to coincide again. The dimensionless elastic-plastic contact hardness is introduced. The relation between real contact area and the contact pressure of the indentation model can be acquired quickly. The results show that the geometric shape of deformable contact parts has an important effect on the contact parameters, especially for the extension of plastic deformation region within a specific range of plasticity index.

A numerical investigation is conducted on a rotating engine blade subjected to a bird strike impact. The bird strike is numerically modelled as a cylindrical gelatine with hemispherical ends to simulate impact on a rotating engine blade. Numerical modelling of a rotating engine blade has shown that bird strikes can severely damage an engine blade, especially as the engine blade rotates, as the rotation causes initial stresses on the root of the engine blade. This paper presents a numerical modelling of the engine blades subjected to bird strike with porosity implemented on the engine blades to investigate further damage assessment due to this porosity effect. As porosity influences the decibel levels on a propeller blade or engine blade, the damage due to bird strikes can investigate the compromise this effect has on the structural integrity of the engine blades. This paper utilizes a bird strike simulation through an LS-Dyna Pre-post software. The numerical constitutive relations are keyed into the keyword manager where the bird’s SPH density, a 10 ms simulation time, and bird velocity of 100 m/s are all set. The blade rotates counter-clockwise at 200 rad/s with a tetrahedron mesh. The porous regions or voids along the blade are featured as 5 mm diameter voids, each spaced 5 mm apart. The bird is modelled as an Elastic-Plastic-Hydrodynamic material model to analyze the bird’s fluid behavior through a polynomial equation of state. To simulate the fluid structure interaction, the blade is modelled with Johnson-Cook Material model parameters of aluminium where the damage of the impact can be observed. The observations presented are compared to previous study of a bird strike impact on non-porous engine blades. ABSTRAK: Penyelidikan berangka telah dijalankan ke atas bilah enjin berputar tertakluk kepada impak pelanggaran burung. Pelanggaran burung tersebut telah dimodelkan secara berangka sebagai silinder gelatin dengan hujungnya berbentuk hemisfera demi mensimulasikan impaknya ke atas bilah enjin yang berputar. Pemodelan berangka bilah-bilah enjin yang berputar tersebut menunjukkan bahawa pelanggaran burung mampu menyebabkan kerosakan teruk terhadap bilah enjin terutamanya apabila bilah enjin sedang berputar oleh sebab putaran menghasilkan tekanan asal di pangkal bilah enjin. Kajian ini mengetengahkan pemodelan berangka ke atas bilah-bilah enjin tertakluk kepada pelanggaran burung terhadap bilah-bilah enjin yg mempunyai keliangan demi menyelidik dan menilai kerosakan kesan daripada keliangan tersebut. Keliangan juga mempengaruhi tahap-tahap desibel ke atas bilah kipas ataupun bilah enjin, kerosakan hasil serangan burung boleh menterjemah tahap ketahanan struktur integriti bagi bilah-bilah enjin tersebut. Penyelidikan ini mengguna pakai perisian “LS-Dyna Pre-post” untuk simulasi pelanggaran burung. Hubungan konstitutif berangka telah dimasukkan sebagai kata kunci di mana ketumpatan SPH burung, masa simulasi 10ms, dan halaju burung ditetapkan kepada 100 m/s. Bilah tersebut berputar pada 200 rad/s arah lawan jam dengan jejaring tetrahedron. Kawasan berliang atau kosong di sepanjang bilah ditetapkan diameternya kepada 5 mm, dan dijarakkan 5 mm di antara satu sama lain. Burung pula dimodelkan sebagai material “Elastic-Plastic-Hydrodynamic” untuk mengkaji sifat bendalir burung melalui persamaan polinomial. Demi mensimulasi interaksi struktur bendalir, bilah tersebut dimodelkan sebagai parameter aluminium material “Johnson Cook” di mana kerosakan daripada impak tersebut dapat diteliti. Penelitian-penelitian tersebut dibandingkan dengan kajian terdahulu ke atas serangan burung terhadap bilah-bilah enjin tidak berliang.

The main motivation for studying damage in bone tissue is to better understand how damage develops in the bone tissue and how it progresses. Such knowledge may help in the surgical aspects of joint replacement, fracture fixation or establishing the fracture tolerance of bones to prevent injury. Currently, there are no standards that create a realistic bone model with anisotropic material properties, although several protocols have been suggested. This study seeks to retrospectively evaluate the damage of bone tissue with respect to patient demography including age, gender, race, body mass index (BMI), height, and weight, and their role in causing fracture. Investigators believe that properties derived from CT imaging data to estimate the material properties of bone tissue provides more realistic models. Quantifying and associating damage with in vivo conditions will provide the required information to develop mathematical equations and procedures to predict the premature failure and potentially mitigate problems before they begin. Creating a realistic model for bone tissue can predict the premature failure(s), provide preliminary results before getting the surgery, and optimize the design of orthopaedic implants. A comparison was performed between the proposed model and previous efforts, where they used elastic, hyper- elastic, or elastic-plastic properties. Results showed that there was a significant difference between the anisotropic material properties of bone when compared with unrealistic previous methods. The results showed that the density is 50% higher in male subjects than female subjects. Additionally, the results showed that the density is 47.91% higher in Black subjects than Mixed subjects, 53.27% higher than Caucasian subjects and 57.41% higher than Asian. In general, race should be considered during modeling implants or suggesting therapeutic techniques.

Abstract An accompanying paper provides the theoretical underpinnings of a new method to determine statically admissible stress distributions in a structure, called Bounded elastic moduli multiplier technique (BEMMT). It has been shown that, for textbook cases such as thick cylinder, beam, etc., the proposed method offers statically admissible stress distributions better than the power law and closer to elastic-plastic solutions. This paper offers several examples to demonstrate the robustness of this method. Upper and lower bound limit loads are calculated using iterative elastic analyses using both power law and BEMMT. These results are compared with the ones obtained from elastic-plastic FEA. Consistently BEMMT has outperformed power law when it comes to estimating lower bound limit loads.

The third generation Al-Li alloy AA2050-T84 is widely used in aircraft applications due to its lightweight and significant mechanical properties. The anisotropic variations of tensile and compression properties of this alloy at various temperatures are substantial. In this work, the variations of the J-integral, CTOD, and Plastic Zone Size (PZS) due to anisotropy of a 4-inch thick AA2050-T84 plate at ambient and cryogenic temperatures were studied numerically by using Compact Tension (C(T)) specimen. The material anisotropy resulted in fracture and constraint parameter variation for Mode-I constant load. Numerical results indicated a decrease in crack driving forces and a constraint parameter with the decrease in temperature at the plate surface and central location. Plate surface locations appear to be isotropic for both temperatures under elastic-plastic fracture analyses as crack driving forces were almost identical. The temperature effect is more on constraint as the normalized PZS values at ambient temperature have been twice that of cryogenic temperature. The isotropic behavior of a plate under sub-zero temperature makes the plate suitable for cryogenic temperature applications.
