The morphology of atmospheric pitting corrosion in 304L stainless steel plate was analysed using MgCl2 droplets in relation to changes in relative humidity (RH) and chloride deposition density (CDD). It was found that highly reproducible morphologies occur that are distinct at different RH. Pitting at higher concentrations, i.e. lower RH, resulted in satellite pits forming around the perimeter of wide shallow dish regions. At higher RH, these satellite pits did not form and instead spiral attack into the shallow region was observed. Increasing CDD at saturation resulted in a very broad-mouthed pitting attack within the shallow dish region. Large data sets were used to find trends in pit size and morphology in what is essentially a heterogeneous alloy. Electrochemical experiments on 304 stainless steel wires in highly saturated solutions showed that the passive current density increased significantly above 3 M MgCl2 and the breakdown pitting potential dropped as the concentration increased. It is proposed that the shallow dish regions grow via enhanced dissolution of the passive film, whereas satellite pits and a spiral attack take place with active dissolution of bare metal surfaces.

The primary aim of this experimental research was to provide information on the slip coefficient performance of ASTM A1010 stainless steel material and to ascertain if its behaviour is comparable to that of 350W Structural Steel. In accomplishing this task, it was important to examine other parameters associated with slip resistance testing, such as (i) bolt relaxation and (ii) the effect of temperature variation and re-usability of high strength bolts. In the 2014 edition of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code, the slip coefficient for clean mill scale and hot dip galvanized surface condition for the 350W structural steel is specified as 0.35, whereas for blasted-clean surface condition is specified as 0.5. Although test results in this research showed lower values for tested structural steel plates, the slip coefficient of A1010 stainless steel material performed better than the 350W structural steel for each surface condition and at the same temperature range. Recommendations regarding the slip resistance test method and the methodology for achieving the required surface conditions in slip resistance connection were drawn.

ABSTRACTEventual liquid water contact of high-level waste glass stored under the unsaturated conditions anticipated at the Yucca Mountain site will be by slow intrusion of water into a breached container/canister assembly. The water flow patterns under these unsaturated conditions will vary, and the Unsaturated Test method has been developed by the YMP to study glass reaction. The results from seven different sets of tests done to investigate the effect of systematically varying parameters such as composition and degree of sensitization of 304L stainless steel, water input volume, and the interval of water contact are discussed. Glass reaction has been monitored over a period of five years, and the parametric effects can result in up to a ten-fold variance in the degree of glass reaction.

Abstract Carpenter Project 70+ Type 304/304L is a modified version of Type 304/304L stainless steel with improved machinability when compared to conventional 304 (Alloy Digest SS-418, revised September 1997) and 304L (Alloy Digest SS-513, revised November 1997). The alloys are nonhardenable austenitic chromium-nickel steels and are good general-purpose materials for simple and complex parts. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, and elasticity. It also includes information on corrosion resistance as well as forming, heat treating, machining, and joining. Filing Code: SS-875. Producer or source: Carpenter Specialty Alloys.
