Abstract. The Ionospheric Photometer (IPM) is carried on the Feng Yun 3D (FY3D) meteorological satellite, which allows for the measurement of far-ultraviolet (FUV) airglow radiation in the thermosphere. IPM is a compact and high-sensitivity nadir-viewing FUV remote sensing instrument. It monitors 135.6 nm emission in the night-side thermosphere and 135.6 nm and N2 LBH emissions in the day-side thermosphere that can be used to invert the peak electron density of the F2 layer (NmF2) at night and O / N2 ratio in the daytime, respectively. Preliminary observations show that the IPM could monitor the global structure of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) structure around 2:00 local time using OI 135.6 nm nightglow properly. It could also identify the reduction of O / N2 in the high-latitude region during the geomagnetic storm of Aug. 26, 2018. The IPM derived NmF2 accords well with that observed by 4 ionosonde stations along 120° E with a standard deviation of 26.67 %. Initial results demonstrate that the performance of IPM meets the designed requirement and therefore can be used to study the thermosphere and ionosphere in the future.

P119 The diagnosis and treatment of pheochromocytoma (PHEO) depend on means to localize the tumor. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging have good sensitivity but poor specificity, and nuclear imaging has limited sensitivity. Here we report initial results of 6-[ 18 F]Fluorodopamine PET scanning in patients with known or suspected PHEO. Of 23 patients, 13 had the tumor. Ten had normal plasma levels of metanephrines, excluding PHEO. All 13 patients with PHEO had abnormal fluorodopamine PET scans that identified the tumors. The 10 patients without PHEO had negative PET scans. Fluorodopamine PET scanning detects PHEO with high sensitivity.

The H2020 SINOPTICA Project (2020-2022) aims at exploiting the untapped potential of assimilating remote sensing (EO-derived and ground-based radar) as well as GNSS-derived datasets (including radio occultation data) and in-situ weather stations data. Those data will be used for very high-resolution, very short-range numerical weather forecasts to improve the prediction of extreme weather events to the benefit of Air Traffic Management (ATM) operations. This will be done by setting up a continuously updated database of remote sensing-derived, GNSS-derived and in-situ weather stations variables, in combination with an automated assimilation system to feed an NWP model. SINOPTICA weather forecast results will be integrated into ATM decision-support tools, visualizing weather information on the controller's display, and generating new 4D trajectories to avoid severe weather areas. This contribution presents the initial results of the assimilation of aforementioned observations into the WRF model, operated at cloud-resolving grid spacing, for two case studies: a hailstorm event occured on 11 May 2019 nearby Malpensa airport and a severe convection episode occurred near Punta Raisi airport (Palermo) on 15 July 2020.

Abstract The AOAC colorimetric acetylacetone method for formaldehyde in sugar products is optimized by means of the simplex experimental design process. The resultant method is almost 4 times as sensitive as the original AOAC method. It is about 33% more sensitive than the simplex optimized J-acid procedure and 45% more sensitive than the simplex optimized chromotropic acid method and, thus, represents one of the most sensitive methods now available. The average relative standard deviation is about ±2.7%. The limit of detectability is estimated to be 30 ppb. The didactic exposition of the simplex optimization process reported earlier is applied to the AOAC acetyl-acetone method. Further insights into simplex operations are provided and certain advantages of simplex application are pointed out. It is shown that, by sacrificing the high sensitivity of the optimized method the parameters of the new method result in about a 10-fold increase in analytical speed. Further application of kinetic considerations and the advantages of high quality, productivity, and economy in chemical analytical methods by means of the simplex experimental design process are described.

We present initial results of a survey of the FUV spectra of disk-accreting cataclysmic variables obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE).FUSE covers the 905 - 1188 Å range at spectral resolutions ≃0.1 Å. To date, FUSE has observed more than 65 cataclysmic variables (CVs). Publicly-available data include observations of 11 dwarf novae (DN), 15 non-magnetic novalikes (NLs), 7 intermediate polars and DQ Her stars, at least 15 polars, and 4 super-soft X-ray binaries.
