El presente artículo presenta la justificación y descripción preliminar de un proyecto internacional de investigación financiado por la Universidad Panamericana, campus de Ciudad de México, que tiene por objeto el estudio y fijación de la ruta que siguió Cortés desde la salida de La Habana y desembarco en la isla de Cozumel hasta su llegada a México-Tenochtitlan, 1519. Bajo los principios de la metodología dc la lectura crítica como recurso para descubrir la veracidad de los contenidos de los documentos en sus distintos soportes físicos, (texto, fotos y audiovisual), se busca despertar el espíritu crítico entre los estudiantes universitarios y facilitar base de reflexión para el alumbramiento de nuevas ideas. En el artículo se esbozan algunos aspectos consustanciales a la expedición como las características del encuentro mutuo de indígenas y españoles, el papel de la Malinche (Doña Marina) en la ruta, las alabanzas que dedican los cronistas a la nueva tierra descubierta y explorada -Nueva España-, el comportamiento de indígenas y españoles y nuestra propuesta de  itinerario de la ruta tras la mención  de las propuestas de otros autores. Se añade una etapa concreta de la ruta como es el llamado puerto o paso de Cortés, último obstáculo para alcanzar la soñada meta México-Tenochtitlan, entre los volcanes Popocatepetl e Iztaccihuatl.

AbstractWhen the Nahua woman known as La Malinche became the interpreter of Hernán Cortés, the conqueror of Mexico, she was not only carving her name as one of history’s most influential translators, but was also rendered one of the most enduring symbols of the cultural intricacies of translation. Malinche’s knowledge of both Spanish and Nahuatl and the way it made her instrumental in the conquerors’ success took her role from the level of linguistic mediator to that of an active agent in cultural transformation, or rather cultural erosion. Having used her linguistic abilities to help the invaders against her people, Malinche has since the conquest been labeled a traitor. Becoming Cortés’s mistress served to further confirm this idea. Yet, being arguably the bearer of the first “mestizo,” Malinche came to be perceived as the mother of the Mexican people and the progenitor of the new race. In both cases, La Malinche has till this moment been emblematic of the complexities of cultural representation.Laura Esquivel’s novel Malinche (2007) explores the heroine’s position at the crossroads between two cultures where the demarcations between the target and source languages are blurred as her allegiance is put into question. The act of translation is rendered ambivalent with the translator, being a slave to the Spaniards, lacking the free will for such a vocation, thus unable to choose sides or determine who she represents. She, however, could have played a major role in preserving the memory of her pre-Colombian world just before its eradication. Daoud Hari’s The Translator: A Tribesman’s Memory of Darfur (2008) offers a different perspective of the role of the translator. Hari, who belongs to the Zaghawa tribe in Western Sudan, acts as a mediator between his people, who are being subjected to systematic genocide by the government-backed Janjaweed militia, and the outside world. Through making the conscious decision to go back to Darfur, Hari turns his knowledge of English into the tool through which he can make the voice of his people heard, hence choosing to be their representative and taking upon himself the task of documenting their trauma.This paper tackles the nature of translation through comparing the role of the translators in both works and exploring the different levels of representation associated with the process of translation. This will be done through examining the loyalty-treason paradigm and how far it affects, positively and/or negatively, the role of the translator as the bearer of his/her people’s memory. The paper will, therefore, deal with the relation between translation and testimony and will investigate how far translation can, in this sense, complement storytelling as a means of chronicling and resistance.

José Limón and La Malinche:The dancer and the Dance de Patrícia Seed contém artigos de vários acadêmicos voltados para cenário, figurinos, música, notas coreográficas e conteúdo histórico sobre a peça musical que tem como protagonista a indígena que esteve ao lado de Hernán Cortés durante a captura do México e que, desde então, se destaca em trabalhos historiográficos, acadêmicos e literários, não só no México, mas em diversas partes do mundo.

Estudio comparativo de dos mujeres indias históricas y legendarias: Doña Marina (Malinche), que acompañó a Hernán Cortés en la colonización de México y la india Catalina asimismo pareja de Pedro de Heredia, colonizador de la provincia y fundador de la ciudad de Cartagena de Indias. Ambas han generado numerosos documentos en todos los soportes: texto, audio, iconografía, literatura, video, etc. En este artículo se presentan las acciones sobre su rapto y paso a la condición de esclavas y, a continuación, al estudio de su papel como colaboradoras y consejeras de ambos conquistadores en el establecimiento de la paz con las tribus indígenas y de su contribución como propagadoras de la fe católica. Además, explicamos cómo se forjaron las relaciones sentimentales de ambas con los dos conquistadores, la actuación de Heredia como fundador y gobernador de la ciudad de Cartagena de Indias; junto a las circunstancias de su muerte y el papel de Catalina y Marina como partícipes en la fundación de la citada ciudad y de la segunda Veracruz.  Creemos que nuestro artículo, en el ámbito de lo que entendemos por lectura crítica, ofrece muchas posibilidades para el conocimiento de los personajes y de los contextos históricos y legendarios de los mismos así como un instrumento de aprendizaje en la investigación para los estudiantes universitarios. This paper compares and contrasts two Indigenous figures in Mexican history and American history. La Malinche aided conquistador Hernan Cortés during his conquest of Tenochtitlan in the sixteenth century in a way similar to Pocahontas’ “rescue” of Capt. John Smith in the next century. Both women are among the earliest Indigenous figures to become mythologized in their respective nations’ history, yet the legacy they left behind is different; La Malinche’s legacy is more contentious than Pocahontas's. This paper explores the similarities their stories share and the role they play as mediators, mothers, and symbolic figures. It includes a careful study of the many ways they have been remembered since, from artistic portrayals to comparisons with biblical figures. Finally, the paper analyzes the nuances in each of their legacies and proposes one way of interpreting why the two figures have come to be regarded differently over time.

This paper provides a historiographical approach to the figure of Doña Marina or La Malinche, the interpreter of Hernán Cortés during the conquest of Mexico, in order to reassess the fictionalization of the character that we often find in Translation Studies. It is argued that this discipline has used her name in an impressionistic way and, therefore, it seems necessary to complement the translation scholar’s approach with that of the historian. The paper will explore the ways in which Doña Marina has been presented by translation scholars. The next section will provide the perspective of historians, focusing on three aspects relevant for Translation Studies: (1) the facts known about her origin, which explain her ability to communicate in two local languages, (2) her role as interpreter during the conquest of Mexico, (3) her alleged participation in the Cholulan massacre as an informant of Cortés. It will conclude with a discussion that aims to highlight the contrast between the use of impressionistic views of historic figures and the more balanced narratives based on factual rather than mythical elements.

<p>Esse artigo tem por objetivo analisar as representações de<em> Malinche</em> na literatura do século XX. <em>La Malinche</em>, batizada pelos espanhóis de Marina, chamada de <em>Doña</em> Marina e também Malinalli, tradutora indígena de Hernán Cortés, teve seu nome quase apagado para que os homens que, se valendo do direito do mais forte, tivessem os seus nomes aclamados como conquistadores, para que alcançassem títulos e fossem relembrados em datas comemorativas. Ela foi nomeada por Hernán Cortés em suas <em>Cartas de relación</em> e, principalmente, por Bernal Díaz em <em>Historia verdadera de la conquista de Nueva España</em>. Conclui-se que os escritores estudados do século XX se pautaram pelas fontes primárias e historiografia para representar sua personagem.</p>

In 1541, the Franciscan friar Motolinía sent to Spain an account of the Tlaxcalan people performing the religious drama The Conquest of Jerusalem in Tlaxcala, New Spain. Previous scholars have read his festival account to reflect only local political interests. I argue that it is a palimpsest, containing both the Tlaxcalans’ ambitious diplomatic strategy, expressed in their performance, and Motolinía’s efforts to steer Castile’s policies in the Americas and the greater Mediterranean.
