The Dark Triad (i.e., narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism) has garnered intense attention over the past 15 years. We examined the structure of these traits’ measure—the Dark Triad Dirty Dozen (DTDD)—in a sample of 11,488 participants from three W.E.I.R.D. (i.e., North America, Oceania, Western Europe) and five non-W.E.I.R.D. (i.e., Asia, Middle East, non-Western Europe, South America, sub-Saharan Africa) world regions. The results confirmed the measurement invariance of the DTDD across participants’ sex in all world regions, with men scoring higher than women on all traits (except for psychopathy in Asia, where the difference was not significant). We found evidence for metric (and partial scalar) measurement invariance within and between W.E.I.R.D. and non-W.E.I.R.D. world regions. The results generally support the structure of the DTDD.

The "Naughty Nine" is a psychometrically optimized German version of the "Dirty Dozen", a scale to assess the Dark Triad. We examined different psychometric features of the Naughty Nine using a representative German sample (N = 2722). We compared different factor structures, investigated the measurement invariance across gender and age groups, and present reference values. The results show that the Naughty Nine is best represented by bifactor models with Machiavellianism as the reference construct that defines the content of the Dark Core. Measurement invariance can be confirmed across gender, although one indicator was marginally critical. Scalar invariance could not be confirmed across age groups. The reference values provide the possibility to rank individual raw values in relation to a German reference population. Implications for the investigation of the Dark Triad with the Naughty Nine or the Dirty Dozen are discussed.

Abstract: Instability on the dark side? Factorial structure, measurement invariance and reliability of the Dirty Dozen Dark Triad in the general population of Lima. The dark triad of the personality is a complex measure composed of three traits such as Machiavellianism, psychopathy and narcissism that are associated with destructive behaviors to the interests of others. The Dirty Dozen Dark Triad (DDDT) scale was used to evaluate the dark triad. The present study seeks to analyze the internal structure, measurement invariance and reliability of DDDT scores. 320 people were recruited (64.1% women), the average age was 24.4 and 89.7% were single. Four measurement models were identified by means of confirmatory factor analysis; the measurement invariance was also evaluated, which did not show a significant deterioration for the group according to gender. In addition, congeneric and tau-equivalent models were implemented and the accuracy of the scores for all the factors was > .70. This DDDT version provides useful evidence at the psychometric level to be implemented with a screening instrument in the psychological evaluation. Keywords: Dirty Dozen Dark Triad; validation; measurement invariance; personality.

Objective: Partialing procedures are frequently used in psychological research. The present study sought to further explore the consequences of partialing, focusing on the replicability of partialing-based results. Method: We used popular measures of the Dark Triad (DT; Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy) to explore the replicability of partialing procedures. We examined whether the residual content of popular DT scales are similar to the residual content of DT scales derived from separate samples based on relations with individual items from the IPIP-NEO-120, allowing for a fine-grained analysis of residual variable content. Results: Profiles were compared using three sample sizes (Small N=156-157, Moderate N = 313-314, Large N = 627-628) randomly drawn from a large MTurk sample (N = 1,255). There was low convergence among original/residual DT scales within samples. Additionally, results showed the content of residual Dirty Dozen scales was not similar across samples. Similar results were found for Short Dark Triad-Machiavellianism, but only in the moderate and small samples. Conclusion: The results indicate that there are important issues that arise when using partialing procedures, including replicability issues surrounding residual variables. Reasons for the observed results are discussed and further research examining the replicability of residual-based results is recommended.

Narcissism may be seen as the most controversial trait of the Dark Triad, character¬ized by both negative and positive aspects. This study tested the hypotheses regarding the relationship between narcissism and intelligence, tolerance for uncertainty, and the Big Five traits. The sample included two groups of participants: 1) middle managers (N=62, Mage = 37.60, SD = 8.84); 2) undergraduate and postgraduate students (N=1187, Mage = 22.37, SD = 4.44). The Dark Triad traits were measured using the Dirty Dozen questionnaire. The following measures were used: 2 subtests for fluid intelligence from the International Cognitive Ability Resource (ICAR) and 2 subscales for verbal intelligence from the Rapid Online Assessment Deployment System (ROADS); New Questionnaire for Tolerance of Uncertainty; and the Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI). For students, a relationship between narcissism was established with the following variables: verbal intelligence (p<0.05); tolerance to uncertainty (p <0.05) and interpersonal intolerance (p<0.01). For managers, narcissism was also linked to tolerance to uncertainty (p<0.05). Positive correlations between narcissism, extroversion, and openness to experience and a negative relationship with emotional stability were established among students. It is concluded that the relationship between narcissism, verbal intelligence, and tolerance for uncertainty reflects the “light” side of narcissism.
