Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis Morelet, Pinus taeda Linnaeus e Pinus oocarpa Schiede ex Schltdl no Espírito Santo (ES), foi realizado o zoneamento agroclimático do estado. Abstract Agroclimatic zoning for cultivation of Pinus in the State of Espirito Santo. A agroclimatological zoning was elaborated to determine the suitable areas for growing Pinus elliottii Engelm var. elliottii, Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis Morelet, Pinus taeda Linnaeus and Pinus oocarpa Schiede ex Schltdl in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. It was used meteorological data from 1977 to 2006, from eighty rainfall posts of the Water National Agency (ANA) located within the state and sixteen posts surrounding states, eleven weather stations belonging of the Instituto Capixaba de Pesquisa, Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural (INCAPER) and three weather stations of the Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET). The climate elements used were air temperature and annual water deficiency, calculated for a soil water storage capacity of 300 mm. The Espírito Santo State showed areas climatically suitable for all species of Pinus, and the species Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis showed the biggest climatically suitable areas compared with the species Pinus elliottii var. elliottii, Pinus oocarpa, Pinus taeda, which due to its climatic requirements, showed lower climatically suitable area. Keywords: Water balance; climatic zoning, Brazil.

Abstract This study presents a floristic-taxonomic treatment of Psidium in the state of Espírito Santo, and is a result of fieldwork combined with analyses of herbarium specimens. Fourteen species of the genus were recognized in Espírito Santo state (P. brownianum, P. cattleianum, P. cauliflorum, P. guajava, P. guineense, P. longipetiolatum, P. myrtoides, P. oblongatum, P. oligospermum, P. ovale, P. rhombeum, P. rufum P. sartorianum, and Psidium sp.), accounting for about 34% of the species richness estimated for the genus in the Atlantic Rainforest biome. The species occur predominantly in lowland forests up to 700 meters above sea level. These areas are highly threatened due to urbanization of coastal areas and agricultural expansion in the state Espírito Santo. Therefore, the conservation of Psidium species in this state requires the creation of more lowland protected areas.

We describe a new species of dull-colored flea-toad, genus Brachycephalus, from the Atlantic Forest of Caparaó mountains in southeastern Brazil. The new species is characterized by its diminutive size, “leptodactyliform” body, brownish color with an inverted V-shaped dark mark on dorsum, skin smooth, hyperossification and dorsal shield absent, linea masculinea absent, Fingers I and IV vestigial, Toe I externally absent, Toe II reduced but functional, Toes III and IV with pointed tips, Toe V vestigial, and ventral color uniformly brown. It is a leaf litter dweller, known only from type locality in the humid forests on the eastern slopes of Parque Nacional do Caparaó mountains, a protected area in the states of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. It is the third flea-toad occurring in the state of Espírito Santo recovered as sister to all other Brachycephalus distributed from the state of São Paulo northward in the Atlantic Forest.

Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1) causes major losses in worldwide livestock, affecting the respiratory and reproductive tracts of bovine. In the past decades, the number of cases in Brazil has been gradually increasing. Therefore, it is important to assess the distribution of infection in different regions of the country. In the state of Espírito Santo (ES) the BoHV 1 infection rate in dairy cattle herds is unknown. Thus, the aim of this study was to detect neutralizing antibodies against BoHV-1 in serum samples from 1,161 non-vaccinated cows from 59 dairy cattle herds in 23 municipalities of the Metropolitan, North, Northwest and South macro-regions. The identification of seropositive cows was evaluated by the virus neutralization test. The results showed that of all serum samples evaluated 775 (66.75%) had neutralizing antibodies against BoHV-1. Moreover, all herds were found positive; however, the percentage of positive cows varied among regions; 49.06%, 62.15%, 67.21% and 80.04% for the Metropolitan, South, North and Northwest macro-regions, respectively. In this study, the results clearly indicate the dissemination of the viral agent in dairy cattle in the ES state, requiring the monitoring and control of diseases related to BoHV-1 infection.

ABSTRACT While studying Croton material collected in Espírito Santo, we found several specimens of Croton sapiifolius, a species previously restricted to the State of Bahia. The present paper updates our knowledge about the taxonomy, habitat and geographic distribution of C. sapiifolius. This finding increases the number of known Croton species occurring in Espírito Santo State to 20 and contributes to the knowledge of Croton of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.

The Atlantic Forest is one of two biodiversity hotspots in Brazil (Mittermeier et al. 1997, Myers et al. 2000). It is the second most diverse (Forzza et al. 2010) and threatened biome because only ca. 11.7% of the Atlantic Forest remains (Ribeiro et al. 2009). Annonaceae are well represented in the Atlantic forest with 92 species, of which 71 are endemic (Maas et al. 2015). In the State of Espírito Santo, there are 12 genera and 44 species (Maas et al. 2015). The majority of genera in Annonaceae that occur in Brazil are represented in Espírito Santo, but previously there were no records of Trigynaea Schlechtendal (1834: 328) for the State.

This report describes a case of hybridization between two species of Meliponinae bees (Melipona scutellaris from the Diamantina plateau in the State of Bahia, and Melipona capixaba from around Domingos Martins, in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil). To demonstrate hybridization, electrophoretic profiles of esterase activity from three colonies were studied. Ten adult workers of M. scutellaris, M. capixaba and the hybrid colony were collected and processed individually. The pattern of esterase activity was constant for each species but differed between them, whereas hybrid bees had a pattern derived from both species. The fact that two ecologically different species of stingless bees separated by more than 300 km could still cross when placed in the same area suggests that there has not been any pressure to develop reproductive isolation.
