In this report a case of actinomycosis in a five-month-old Holstein calf is described. The patient displayed a hard and immobile swelling in the mandible and fever. Computed tomography (CT) imaging of the skull was performed under deep sedation and revealed an asymmetrical appearance of the mandible with the presence of intra-mandibular hypodense lesions. Haematologic and serum biochemical profiles revealed leukocytosis, neutrophilia, hypoalbuminaemia and hypergammaglobulinaemia. Treatment consisted of flushing the lesion and administration of antibiotics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The calf responded to therapy and had recovered almost completely four months later. The present case indicates that CT is an effective non-invasive means of identifying mandibular lesions in cattle.

Introduction. Myxoma is the most common primary benign heart tumor. The most frequent location is the left atrium, the chamber of the heart that receives oxygen- rich blood from the lungs. Myxomas usually develop in women, typically between the ages of 40 and 60. Symptoms may occur at any time, but most often they are asymptomatic or oligosymptomatic for a long period of time. Symptoms usually go along with body position, and are related to compression of the heart cavities, embolization and the appearance of general symptoms. The diagnosis of benign tumors of the heart is based on anamnesis, clinical features and findings of the tumor masses by use of non-invasive and invasive imaging methods. Extensive surgical resection of the myxoma is curative with minimal mortality. Long term clinical and echocardiographic follow-up is mandatory. Case report. We reported a case of a 62-year-old male, presented with 15 days of intermittent shortness of breath, dizziness and feeling of heart palpitations and subsequently diagnosed with right atrial myxoma based on transthoracic echocardiography . The patient was emergently operated in our hospital. Long-term followup did not reveal recurrence. Conclusion. Our case was an atypical localisation of right atrial myxoma. Whether the intracardiac mass is benign or malignant, early surgery is obligatory in order to prevent complications.

Traumatic reticulopericarditis is a very frequently occurring, high morbid and mortality syndrome affecting bovines in large animal practice. It is quite common in delta districts of Tamil Nadu. For early intervention and economic loss minimization, appropriate diagnostic and prognostic testing is essential. Ultrasound guided, percutaneous pericardiocentesis is the non-invasive technique and helped in therapeutic management and prognostication of traumatic reticulopericarditis. This case documented the successful utility of the palliative therapy.

Recent years have seen the emergence of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) as an important tool for management of patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Several well-conducted studies in the recent years have established its role in the initial, as well as later management of these patients. The aim of this case report is to encourage ICU physician to use NIV on selected AECOPD patients, therefore to reduce the need for endotracheal intubation, the length of hospital stay, and the risk of death. In this case report, we selected a case of AECOPD whose symptoms were getting worse in spite of adequate conventional treatment. He was given NIV for 20 hours following a standard protocol. Final result showed significant improvement in patient's symptoms, vital signs and ABG parameters ultimately patient stay time in ICU was reduced and patient was also benefited financially. From this first ever-successful application of NIV in our ICU we learned that we can use it successfully in next cases.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/kyamcj.v2i1.13522 KYAMC Journal Vol.2(1) 2011 pp.152-155
