A Bioethnography

We argue in chapter 1 that ethnography is the foundation on which anthropology stands. This chapter discusses what, if anything, we have learned from our research—beyond the empirical data gathered about the material remains—that might approach some degree of ethnographic insight. We look most closely to our case studies in chapter 6 as a means of addressing the question. In the case of our hydrocephalic, we consider the impact of such a devastating and protracted condition on the caregivers who must have sustained her. We also consider the evidence for personal and emotional behaviors, such as the braiding of a child’s hair and the burial of premature neonates in pottery urns. We conclude that we have learned a great deal beyond the material we set out to investigate.

Chapter 1 introduces the concept of translocal inequality by highlighting the multi-faceted nature of inequality and its manifestation across multiple places, times and forms. Examples are offered to demonstrate how factors as diverse as a parent’s health, a child’s education and the specifics of agricultural livelihoods continue to influence individuals’ behaviour and wellbeing regardless of distance. However, as argued in this chapter, the impact of material differences across space is only part of the story. Rather, as Chapter 1 posits, such persistent, translocal inequalities in mobile contexts are sustained by narratives shaped by the interplay of economic, ecological, and embodied factors. In highly mobile and dynamic contexts, it is shown, these narratives of stigma and praise, inclusion and exclusion, are the constant that facilitates the persistence of inequality. Arguing that the large-scale nature of much scholarship on inequality serves to mask this subtle role, Chapter 1 then introduces the six linked case studies that comprise the book’s empirical sections, outlining how their combination reveals inequality to be a “total social fact” rooted in translocal networks of association, affection and obligation.

Global biodiversity is declining faster than at any time in human history. This loss is largely attributed to human activities, in particular urban, industrial and agricultural development. Biodiversity offsetting seeks to balance the environmental impacts from development through the generation of measurable gains in biodiversity that compensate for loss. To achieve No Net Loss or a Net Gain in biodiversity, the biodiversity gains from offsetting must be at least equivalent or greater to the biodiversity losses from development. But while losses from development are typically immediate, gains from offsetting are generated over longer timeframes, often after the impact has occurred. Determining equivalence between an impact and an offset thereby requires projecting the gains that will be generated over an offset management period. As biodiversity is in decline, gains may be generated from averting further loss in biodiversity, as well as from improving the biodiversity at an offset site. To determine the gains attributable to an offset, assumptions must be made about changes in biodiversity with and without the offset. These assumptions have serious implications on achieving a No Net Loss outcome from offsetting, however they may not always be drawn from empirical data. In this thesis, I review the assumptions used to calculate gains from offsets in two loss-gain exchange case studies under Victorian offsetting policy. These gains were used to offset losses in native vegetation from permitted development impacts, and reflect the gains from projected averted loss and improvement in native vegetation over the 10-year offset management periods. The assumptions of gain vary between the case studies according to the native vegetation condition, foregone land use entitlements and proposed management activities, but the assumptions are not entirely explicit nor supported by empirical data. When compared to available data on native vegetation change without an offset, I reveal that the assumptions of gain from averted loss are significantly over-estimated. Over-estimating gains from offsetting is problematic, as it allows a larger development impact for the same offset, resulting in a net loss of native vegetation and exacerbating biodiversity decline. I conclude that a No Net Loss outcome was unlikely to have been achieved in either case study presented in this thesis, and that it is questionable whether No Net Loss is possible under the current policy framework in Victoria. Based on my analysis of the two case studies, I make eight recommendations to improve the plausibility and transparency of the assumptions of gains under Victorian offsetting policy, and to ensure that the policy is more likely to achieve its No Net Loss objective.

Chapter 1 (‘A Window to Internal and External Change in Banking’) provides a wide-arch view of the themes in the book. It highlights how in spite of being deeply embedded in our culture as an object of everyday life, the interaction with ATMs is largely inconsequential for most people. This chapter also forwards a case to study the ATM to better understand the possibilities for technological change to bring about a cashless economy. Another argument put forward is that the ATM is essential to appreciate the technological and organizational challenges that gave rise to self-service banking. As a result, the case is made that business histories of the late twentieth century will be incomplete without proper consideration to the impact of computer technology on the different aspects of business organizations.

The retail industry globally is in an era of profound, perhaps unprecedented, change, change which has been further accelerated for many by the impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic and its attendant health and economic crises. The new landscape of retailing is unforgiving: success can be achieved more quickly than ever before but failure is equally rapid. Opportunities in the new landscape of retailing are profound, but so too are the challenges. Part 2 discusses the structures, skills and capabilities that retail enterprises will need to be successful in this new landscape and the skills and capabilities required of the leaders of retail enterprises. More than 25 detailed case studies of innovative, successful enterprises internationally and more than one hundred smaller examples, all updated and many new since the first edition, are used to illustrate the themes discussed. Frameworks are presented to provide practical guidance for enterprise leaders to understand and contextualize the nature of change re-shaping retail landscapes globally. ObjectivesEnsuring that healthcare is patient-centred, safe and harm free is the cornerstone of the NHS. The Scottish Patient Safety Programme (SPSP) is a national initiative to support the provision of safe, high-quality care. SPSP promotes a coordinated approach to quality improvement (QI) in primary care by providing evidence-based methods, such as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Breakthrough Series Collaborative methodology. These methods are relatively untested within dentistry. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact to inform the development and implementation of improvement collaboratives as a means for QI in primary care dentistry.DesignA multimethod study underpinned by the Theoretical Domains Framework and the Kirkpatrick model. Quantitative data were collected using baseline and follow-up questionnaires, designed to explore beliefs and behaviours towards improving quality in practice. Qualitative data were gathered using interviews with dental team members and practice-based case studies.ResultsOne hundred and eleven dental team members completed the baseline questionnaire. Follow-up questionnaires were returned by 79 team members. Twelve practices, including two case studies, participated in evaluation interviews. Findings identified positive beliefs and increased knowledge and skills towards QI, as well as increased confidence about using QI methodologies in practice. Barriers included time, poor patient and team engagement, communication and leadership. Facilitators included team working, clear roles, strong leadership, training, peer support and visible benefits. Participants’ knowledge and skills were identified as an area for improvement.ConclusionsFindings demonstrate increased knowledge, skills and confidence in relation to QI methodology and highlight areas for improvement. This is an example of partnership working between the Scottish Government and NHSScotland towards a shared ambition to provide safe care to every patient. More work is required to evaluate the sustainability and transferability of improvement collaboratives as a means for QI in dentistry and wider primary care.
