Purpose In this viewpoint paper, the key advances needed for human resource development in the tourism industry of Guyana are outlined. The purpose of this paper is to present the author’s perspective backed up by relevant literature. Design/methodology/approach This research is exploratory in nature. Secondary data were collected to provide background to the research and primary data were collected via a survey of private sector tourism organizations. Findings Data gathered show that the tourism industry is primed and ready to accept changes in HR training. Notable areas are first responder training; basic and advanced wine training; preventative maintenance; specialized food and beverage skills; advanced culinary arts and foreign languages. In addition to the skills required, the findings showed that some legislative work needs to be carried out such as the draft tourism policy being made into law. Originality/value It is anticipated that the findings of this research will guide policy makers in drafting a human resource development policy for the tourism industry.

Human resources development for tourism industry is one of the most important issues for accelerating tourism growth. The need of human resource development is underlined by the fact that the tourism industry is a hospitality function and the qualify of service provided by the personnel engaged in the industry has direct bearing on the hospitality function. The service is provided from people to people and it directly reflects the attitude, knowledge and orientation of engaged personnel. Therefore, though the Aurangabad region has got two of the most unique and historically important World Heritage Sites of Ajanta and Ellora; the comparable visitation experience can only be achieved if the caliber of guides is in tune with the available tourism products.

He purpose of Human Resource Development is to improve the capacity of the human resource through learning and performance at the individual, process and organizational levels. By applying a well-ordered and professional HRD approach to work in the protected areas field, the skills, knowledge and attitudes of park personnel will be enriched and this overall quality of work performed will improve. There are a number of problems and constraints, which concern the human resource development in the Tourism Industry, viz., shortage of qualified manpower; shortage of tourism training infrastructure and qualified trainers; working conditions in the Tourism Industry; and lack of proper strategies and policies for human resource development. The present study is an attempt to analyze the HRD initiatives of Tourism Industry with special reference to Air India Ltd. to enhance and sharpen the capabilities of its employees. The study also identifies the need of the Air India to incorporate the spirit of HRD in day to day functioning by utilizing the all possible human resource systems and mechanism to the organization.
