The role of rare earth addition on the microstructure and texture during recrystallization of cold rolled sheets is investigated by a comparative study of pure Mg, Mg-3Y and Mg1.5Nd sheets. In pure Mg, nucleation occurs mainly at shear bands which results in a texture weakening. The basal-type texture re-strengthens rapidly during grain growth of the pure Mg sheet. In contrast, in the Mg-RE alloys the weaker texture formed during early recrystallization strage is retained during further annealing due to retarded grain growth. Uni-axial tensile and Erichsen tests show that ductility and sheet formability are significantly improved by addition of rare earth elements.

AbstractThe intermetallic compound NiTi was cold rolled at room temperature. Amorphous bands were formed within the finely twined crystalline matrix after thickness reduction of 60%. Striking similarities were observed in microstructural morphology between amorphous bands and shear bands that are generally observed in heavily cold-rolled pure metals. We suggest from the present observations together with the reported results in other solid-state amorphization experiments that the amorphous bands are produced in the shear bands, and that amorphization is caused by mechanical instability against the shear stress.

A silicon steel single crystal with initial Goss orientation, i.e. the {110}<001> orientation, was cold rolled up to 89 % thickness reduction. Most of the crystal volume rotates into the two symmetrical equivalent {111}<112> orientations. However, a weak Goss component is still present after high strain, although the Goss orientation is mechanically instable under plane strain loading. Two types of Goss-oriented crystal volumes are found in the highly deformed material. We suggest that their origin is different. The Goss-oriented regions that are observed within shear bands form during the cold rolling process. In contrast, those Goss-oriented crystal volumes that are found inside of microbands survive the cold rolling.

Al-brass alloys (Cu29.5Zn2.5Al wt. %) were produced by gravity casting and homogenized at 800?C for 2 h, resulting in a binary phase morphology identified as cubic ? and martensitic ?? phases through X-ray diffraction (XRD). Samples were then subsequently cold rolled and annealed at 150, 300, 400, and 600?C for 30 minutes. Visible traces of slip, intersecting slip bands, and shear bands were observed in microstructure images of the samples after each progressive deformation stage. Deformation-induced martensites were present after 20 % cold rolling. Higher thickness reduction resulted in simultaneous strain hardening of the phases. Low temperature annealing slightly increased microhardness, of both ? and ??, due to the formation of precipitates. SEM-EDX analysis showed that no solute segregation was found in annealed samples. Annealing at higher temperature resulted in conventional softening. Recrystallized equiaxed ?? phase grains were visible after annealing at 600?C.

Microstructural evolution during the annealing of cold rolled Mg, Mg-1.5Nd and Mg-3Y sheets has been examined. The experimental results show a significant difference in recrystallization kinetics and grain growth between pure Mg and Mg-RE alloy sheets. Pure Mg sheet shows rapid recrystallization and grain growth, whereas recrystallization is considerably retarded in the Mg-RE alloys. Although recrystallized grains which are triggered at shear bands in the cold rolled pure Mg sheet show a relatively weak texture with a basal pole split into the sheet rolling direction, rapid grain growth is accompanied by re-strengthening of the basal-type texture. In contrast, a weak texture appears in the early recrystallization stage in Mg-RE alloys and is retained during annealing due to retarded recrystallization and grain growth.

ABSTRACTOur recent studies revealed that heavily cold-rolled Ni3Al foils have a good bending ductility in spite of almost no elongation in tensile test. In this paper, bending characteristics of 95% cold-rolled foils around transverse and rolling directions (TD and RD, respectively) were examined to understand the bending mechanism. Fracture elongation on the tension surface shows a large bending anisotropy: 5 % for the TD bending, while less than 1% for the RD bending. The bending ductility is due to {111}<110> slip deformation. In the TD bending, slip occurs on the slip systems operated during cold rolling, and cracks initiate along the shear bands. In the RD bending, slip occurs on the other {111} planes besides the slip planes operated during cold rolling, and fracture occurs as a result of the dislocation interaction in the both planes.

The recrystallization behavior of 50% cold rolled Fe-22%Mn-0.376%C alloy during annealing at 560°C, 630°C and 700°C was investigated. Microhardness tests were applied for characterization of the recrystallization kinetics, X-ray diffraction and EBSD measurements were utilized to characterize the crystallographic texture and the grain microstructure. The obtained experimental data were evaluated in terms of the JMAK model. The obtained values of the Avrami exponent varied in the range between 0.70 and 1.37. The inhomogeneous grain microstructure after recrystallization is interpreted in terms of non-randomly distributed nuclei. Shear bands, lamellar lines intersecting with mechanical twins and grain boundaries with localized high misorientation gradients were identified to be preferential nucleation sites. No pronounced texture was observed after annealing at 630°C.
