This chapter analyzes the nature of the scientific discovery of the tuberculosis bacillus and preventative work against the epidemic through the lens of one of Robert Koch’s associates and friends, Kitasato Shibasaburō. Kitasato, a Japanese scientist and government employee, worked with Koch at the behest of the Japanese government, an organization with which he frequently clashed. Due to his personal foibles and recurrent arguments with politicians and other scientists in Japan, Kitasato’s work on tuberculosis, despite being groundbreaking, was often overlooked in his homeland. Thus, Kitasato’s personal problems, this chapter surmises, may have cost Japan proper tuberculosis prevention undertaken successfully in other countries.

Occasionally, it is the responsibility of a supervisor to help a staff speech clinician resolve professional and or personal problems that interfere with the delivery of quality services. To deal with this situation, the supervisor must be equipped with the techniques and procedures for effective organizational communication. This article presents a case study in which a speech clinician demonstrated irresponsibility in various job areas. The supervisor’s philosophy and the procedures used in managing these problems are presented. The behavioral changes suggest that the supervisor’s interventive procedures were clinically significant and warrant further investigation.

We reflect on the typical sequence of complex emotions associated with the process of scientific discovery. It is proposed that the same sequence is found to underlie many forms of media entertainment, albeit substantially scaled down. Hence, a distinct theory of intellectual entertainment is put forward. The seemingly timeless presence of multiple forms of intellectual entertainment finds its roots in a positive moral approval of the self of itself.
