The General Vegetation Characteristics of Cedar Forests on Taurus Mountains

The Byzantine churches of Cilicia have attracted considerable attention during the last 80 years. Often scholars have focused on the urban centres of Cilicia Pedias, the coastal settlements of Cilicia Trachea, and the monasteries near the important roads. However, the Taurus mountains, those lofty barriers which surround the fertile plain, have been ignored by most modern investigators. In the late antique world Greek communities found protection and sustenance in the isolated Highlands. While not as wealthy or numerous as their more urbane cousins to the south, these Cilician Greeks also have left behind monuments of their worship.In the summer of 1979 I was fortunate to locate and survey in the Highlands two Byzantine churches which hitherto had not been published. The study of these buildings was part of a more general field survey of classical and medieval sites. Since no excavations were undertaken all descriptions and surveys are based on surface remains. The purpose of this paper is to describe the location, masonry and plan of each church and to offer rudimentary conclusions based on a comparison with the known Cilician churches.

In a 42,750-ha survey area in subtropical Queensland, rabbit warrens are confined mainly to sandy soils. Within these favoured areas the population is distributed unevenly, and there is further selection for preferred habitats. Detailed studies on a 246-ha area of sandhill showed that the open woodland and grassy open woodland associations contain most warrens per unit area, and also the largest warrens. The quality of habitat for rabbits appears to be determined by availability of food, type of soil, and vegetation cover providing protection from predators. In some vegetation associations, use of burrows varies only slightly, in others there are significant changes. There is a significant correlation between the estimated numbers of rabbits in the population, the total number of rabbits seen on spotlight transect counts in the evening, the numbers of rabbits seen on warrens during late afternoon watches, and the total number of active burrow entrances present in the study area. A list of plant species present and a description of the 23 vegetation associations in the study area is presented.

In this study, which was carried out in 2018, some vegetation characteristics of Handüzü plateau which was connected to Güneysu district of Rize province was determined by using Lup method. Canopy cover and botanical composition ratios and pasture status class were investigated in the study. As a result of the study, 4 grasses, 4 legume and 33 other family plants were identified. The rate canopy covering of the research area was 82.40%, the rate of grasses in the botanical composition was 33.37%, the rate of the legumes was 5.75% and the ratio of the other families was 60.88%. The first three species, the most common found in pasture, respectively; Nardus stricta L. (27.00%), Carex atrata L. subsp. aterrima (Hoppe) Hartm. (11.10%) and Polygala alpestris Rchb. (8.50%). Pasture status was determined as weak with a value of 2.456% degree of pasture quality. It was concluded that especially controlled grazing and top-seeding, were applied together other methods of breeding.
