This paper looked into optimal tuning of a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller used in Electro-mechanical Dual Acting Pulley Continuously Variable Transmission (EMDAP-CVT) system for controlling the output obtained, and hence, to minimize the integral of absolute errors (IAE). The main objective was to obtain a stable, robust, and controlled system by tuning the PID controller by using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. The incurred value was compared with the traditional tuning techniques like Ziegler-Nichols and it had been proven better. Hence, the results established that tuning the PID controller using PSO technique offered less overshoot, a less sluggish system, and reduced IAE.

In this paper, an intelligent controller of PM DC Motor drive is designed using particle swarm optimization (PSO) method for tuning the optimal proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller parameters. The proposed approach has superior feature, including easy implementation, stable convergence characteristics and very good computational performances efficiency. To show the validity of the PID-PSO controller, a DC motor position control case is considered and some simulation results are shown. The DC Motor Scheduling PID-PSO controller is modeled in MATLAB environment.. It can be easily seen from the simulation results that the proposed method will have better performance than those presented in other studies.

Power plant steam temperature control has characteristics of long delay and great inertia, a new method is proposed by analyzing above-mentioned problems and existing control methods on this paper. The method consists of an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm and a fuzzy immune PID controller. In addition, simulation results of PID, traditional fuzzy immune PID and fuzzy immune PID based on PSO are presented and compared. Fuzzy immune PID Control based on PSO has advantages of short adjustment time, quicker response time, better anti-interference ability and more stability. It can reduce the fluctuation of power plant steam temperature, and has better control performance and practical value.

This paper utilizes the Improved Particle Swarm Optimization (IPSO) with bounded constraints technique for adjusting the gains of a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) and Iterative Learning Control (ILC) controllers. This study compares the conventional ILC-PID controller with proposed IPSO-ILC-PID controller. A cycloid trajectory for mimicking the real industrial motion profile is applied. Two system plants with nonminimum phase are numerically simulated. Proposed IPSO with bounded constraints technique is evaluated on one axis of linear synchronous motor (LSM) with a PC-based real time controller. Simulations and experiment results show that the proposed controller can reduce the error significantly after two iterations.

Wind energy is a useful and reliable energy source. Wind turbines are attracting attention with the dependency of the world on clean energy. The turbulent nature of wind profiles along with uncertainty in the modeling of wind turbines makes them more challenging for prolific power extraction. The pitch control angle is used for the effective operation of wind turbines at the above-nominal wind speed. To extract stable power as well as to keep wind turbines in a safe operating region, the pitch controller should be intelligent and highly efficient. For this purpose, proportional–integral–derivative controllers are mostly used. The parameters for the proportional–integral–derivative controller are unknown and calculated by numerous techniques, which is a quite cumbersome task. In this research, the particle swarm optimization technique is used but the conventional particle swarm optimization technique cannot tackle the system’s nonlinearity and uncertainties. Hence, the proposed particle swarm optimization algorithm is employed for the calculation of the controller’s optimal parameters. The proposed technique is implemented on a 5-MW wind turbine, which is designed using the Bladed software. Simulation is performed using MATLAB/Simulink to validate the effectiveness of the proposed technique. A variable wind profile is fed as input into the system and the proposed controller provides satisfactory results for the power, rotor speed, and torque. The system is stable and the settling time is reduced.
