The Common Core State Standards can be taught with Minecraft, an interactive creative Lego®-like game. Integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (iSTEM) authors share ideas and activities that stimulate student interest in the integrated fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in K—grade 6 classrooms.

Principles and Standards for School Mathematics emphasizes the importance of students being able to recognize and apply mathematics in other subject areas and disciplines as well as to daily life. Fostering development in the integrated fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM, “is a priority, not only because we need today’s students to become tomorrow’s leaders in innovation and help our economy, but also because we need to increase STEM interest and skills overall for everybody” (eSchool News 2009). As a key component of their STEM experiences, students must “develop a depth of understanding and ability to apply mathematics to novel situations, as college students and employees regularly do” (Common Core State Standards 2010).

This chapter explores connections between music and mathematics. It includes rationales for integrating music and math, common links between the two disciplines, and a discussion of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and the National Core Arts Standards. Tables clearly show the standards that are incorporated throughout the lessons and examples. The chapter contains four detailed, full-length lessons that integrate music and mathematics. These include lessons exploring part/whole relationships in music and math; analyzing structure and pattern, using the song “Wide Open Spaces” as a model; studying the Fibonacci sequence in math and music; and creating an amusement park ride with a theme song. The chapter ends with an inventory of ideas detailing fourteen additional lesson topics, specific teaching strategies, and recommended activities.

Our favorite lesson, an interactive experiment that models exponential decay, launches with a loud dice roll. This exploration engages students in lively data collection that motivates interest in key components of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics: functions, modeling, and statistics and probability (CCSSI 2010).
