The monitoring system in this study is a system created to find out data about temperature, humidity, and air quality in a room. This research develops a monitoring system that uses the internet so that the monitoring range becomes wider. By utilizing the Internet of Things (IoT) technology using the thingspeak application integrated with the NodeMCU module ESP8266 features an LM35 temperature sensor that functions as a temperature detector, a DHT11 sensor as a humidity sensor, and an MQ-135 sensor as an air quality detector. These sensors send input signals to the NodeMCU ESP8266 module for processing. The wifi module contained in the NodeMCU ESP8266 module sends the value read by the sensor to the IoT Thingspeak platform which records logging data in graphical form. This system has the potential to be used as an indoor air quality monitoring system to raise awareness about the importance of healthy air quality

Air Monitoring becomes a systematic approach for sensitivity and finding out the circumstances of the atmosphere. The major concern of air quality monitoring is to measure the concentration of pollution and other important parameter related to the contamination and provides information in real-time to make decisions at right time to cure lives and save the environment. This paper proposes an Architectural Framework for the air quality monitoring system based on Internet-of-Things (IoT) and via Fog computing techniques with novel methods to obtain real-time and accurate measurements of conventional air quality monitoring. IoT-based real-time air pollution monitoring system is projected to at any location and stores the measured value of various pollutants over a web server with the Internet. It can facilitate the process and filter data near the end of the IoT nodes in a concurrent manner and improving the Latency issue with the quality of services.

In this paper, an IoT-based indoor air quality monitoring platform, consisting of an air quality-sensing device called “Smart-Air” and a web server, is demonstrated. This platform relies on an IoT and a cloud computing technology to monitor indoor air quality in anywhere and anytime. Smart-Air has been developed based on the IoT technology to efficiently monitor the air quality and transmit the data to a web server via LTE in real time. The device is composed of a microcontroller, pollutant detection sensors, and LTE modem. In the research, the device was designed to measure a concentration of aerosol, VOC, CO, CO2, and temperature-humidity to monitor the air quality. Then, the device was successfully tested for reliability by following the prescribed procedure from the Ministry of Environment, Korea. Also, cloud computing has been integrated into a web server for analyzing the data from the device to classify and visualize indoor air quality according to the standards from the Ministry. An application was developed to help in monitoring the air quality. Thus, approved personnel can monitor the air quality at any time and from anywhere, via either the web server or the application. The web server stores all data in the cloud to provide resources for further analysis of indoor air quality. In addition, the platform has been successfully implemented in Hanyang University of Korea to demonstrate its feasibility.

Air pollution is a major environmental health problem affecting everyone. An air quality index (AQI) helps disseminate air quality information (almost in real time) about pollutants like PM10, PM2.5, NO2, SO2, CO, O3, etc. In the 2018 environmental performance index (EPI), India ranks 177 out of 180 countries, which indicates a need for awareness about air pollution and air quality monitoring. Out of the 100 smart cities in the Indian Smart City Mission, which is an urban renewal program, many cities have considered the inclusion of smart environment sensors or smart poles with environment sensors as part of their proposals. Internet of things (IoT) environmental monitoring applications can monitor (in near real time) the quality of the air in crowded areas, parks, or any location in the city, and its data can be made publicly available to citizens. The chapter describes some IoT environmental monitoring applications being implemented in some of the smart cities like Surat, Kakinada.
