The main purpose of this study was to find out the best variety of brinjal having resistance to BSFB. A pot experiment was carried out at the germplasm centre, Agrotechnology Discipline, Khulna University, Khulna during February 2014 to August 2014. The experiment was laid out in CRD using thirteen varieties with five replications. The varieties were V1=BARI begun-1, V2=BARI begun-4, V3=BARI begun-5, V4=BARI begun-6, V5=BARI begun-7, V6=BARI begun-8, V7=BARI begun-9, V8=BARI begun-10, V9=Makra, V10=Muktokashi, V11=Lalita, V12=Hazra, V13=Chaga. Data were collected on total number of shoot, total number of infested shoot, percentage of shoot damage, percentage of shoot infestation reduction, numbers of larvae per infested shoot, total number of fruit, percentage of fruit damage, percentage of fruit infestation reduction, numbers of larvae per infested fruit. Results have shown that the minimum shoot infestation was found in BARI begun-6 (29.60%, 32.40%, 29.86% and 29.38%, respectively at four different stages of eggplant). Percent of fruit infestation was minimum in V4 (BARI begun-6) (25.16%, 27.42% and 25.40% at three stages respectively).J. Bangladesh Agril. Univ. 16(2): 227-231, August 2018

Loss of soil fertility as a result of continuous cropping on the same piece of land has necessitated the need to improve soil fertility for better crop yields. Inorganic and organic fertilizers have been used to improve soil fertility, however, excessive use of soil amendments improve vegetative growth of plants thereby attracting large numbers of insect pests. Cow dung and poultry droppings were used as soil amendments in a field experiment using eggplant Solanum melongena. The effects of these organic manures were compared with inorganic fertilizer (NPK) and a control where there was no application of soil amendment in a randomized complete block design with 3 replicates. Parameters studied were pests’ and their numbers, plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf area, stem girth and yield. The major insect pests identified on the plant were Bemisia tabaci, Aphis gossypii, Leucinodes orbonalis and Eublemma olivacea. Bemisia tabaci and Aphis gossypii scores were significantly larger on cow dung and poultry manure plots. Leucinodes orbonalis and Eublemma olivacea numbers were not significantly different on the treated and control plots. Mean plant height, number of leaves and yield differed significantly among the soil amended plots. Even though soil amendments improve the nutrient content of the soil and the yield of crops it could lead to increase in pests numbers and damage caused to plants.

Comparative Potential of Different Botanicals and Synthetic Insecticides and Their Economics Against Leucinodes Orbonalis in Eggplant The field experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential of two botanicals viz; ozoneem and neem seed kernel extract (NSKE) and three chemical insecticides viz; imidacloprid, alphamathrin, chlorpyriphos 50% EC + cypermethrin 5% EC against Leucinodes orbonalis, during the years from 2008 to 2009. Botanicals were tested alone and in combination with cultural practices. On the basis of the pooled means, the results revealed that three sprays of chlorpyriphos + cypermethrin @ 0.01% active substance (a.s.) in 15 days intervals was found to be the most economical, resulting in minimum shoot (2.15%) and fruit (12.95%) infestation respectively, followed by alphamathrin @ 0.01% a.s. with a highest marketable yield of 87.77 q/ha. Maximum marketable yield was received from the treatment with alphamathrin, but due to high costs involved in the use of this chemical, it took second place. Three sprays of NSKE @ 5 ml/lt. recorded a maximum of shoot (3.91%) and fruit (24.49%) infestation, respectively. However, shoot and fruit infestation was brought down and marketable yield increased to some extent, when these treatments were combined with cultural methods. It is therefore, suggested that the combination of chlorpyriphos 50% EC + cypermethrin 5% EC, being the most effective and economically viable insecticide, can be utilized as a valuable chemical component in Integrated Pest Management to manage the L. orbonalis in eggplant crop.

ABSTRACTBioactivity of mixed seed extract of Barringtonia asiatica l. (kurz.) (lecythidaceae) and sap of Azadirachtaindica A. Juss. (meliaceae) against larvae of Spodoptera litura f. (lepidoptera: noctuidae)Barringtonia asiatica and Azadirachta indica are known to have variety of chemical compounds that haspotency to be developed as botanical pesticides. The study aimed to determine insecticidal toxicity of B.asiatica seed extract and A. indica sap and their mixture. The experiment was carried out in the Laboratoryof Pesticides and Application Technology, Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture,Universitas Padjadjaran. The experiments were conducted either on toxicity test of the seed extract of B.asiatica and the sap of A. indica singly or their mixture based on the comparison of LC95. Toxicity testing wasperformed using a leaf-residue feeding method on the instar I of Spodoptera litura larvae. The resultsshowed that seed extractof B.asiatica has a moderate toxicity to S.liturawith the LC50 value of 0.491% andaffected body weight of the larvae. The sap of A.indicahas had slightly low toxicity with the LC50 value of1.310%. The mixture of B. asiatica seed extract and A. Indica sap (based on ratio of 4.1%of B. asiaticacompare to 4.9% of A. Indica) has LC50 value of 0.970% (slightly low toxicity) and the LC95 value of 15.99%that was antagonistic on the LC95 level with Cotoxicity Ratio value of 0.23% on 12 days after treatment.Keywords: Cotoxicity ratio, independent joint action, Barringtonia asiatica, Azadirachta indica, SpodopteralituraABSTRAKBarringtonia asiatica dan Azadirachta indica diketahui memiliki berbagai senyawa kimia yang berpotensidikembangkan sebagai pestisida nabati. Penelitian yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui toksisitas ekstrak biji B.asiatica dan getah A. indica serta campurannya telah dilakukan di Laboraturium Pestisida dan TeknikAplikasi, Departemen Hama dan Penyakit Tumbuhan, Fakultas Pertanian, Universitas Padjadjaran.Penelitian meliputi uji toksisitas ekstrak biji B. asiatica dan getah A.indica secara tunggal, dan pengujiancampuran ekstrak biji B. asiatica dan getah A.indica berdasarkan pada perbandingan LC95. Pengujiantoksisitas dilakukan dengan metode celup pakan pada larva instar I Spodoptera litura. Hasil penelitianmenunjukkan bahwa ekstrak biji B. asiatica bersifat toksik sedang terhadap S. litura dengan nilai LC50sebesar 0,491% dan berpengaruh terhadap bobot basah larva. Getah A. indica bersifat toksik ringan dengannilai LC50 1,310%. Campuran ekstrak biji B. asiatica dan getah A. indica berdasarkan rasio 4,1% B. asiaticaberbanding 4,9% A. indica memiliki LC50 sebesar 0,970% (toksisitas ringan) dengan LC95 sebesar 15,99% dandinyatakan bersifat antagonis pada LC95 dengan nilai Nisbah Kotoksisitas 0,23% pada 12 hari setelahaplikasi.Kata kunci: Nisbah Kotoksisitas, Kerja bersama bebas, Barringtonia asiatica, Azadirachta indica, Spodopteralitura
