The decay of seeds is irreversible and at best can only be delayed by applying techniques that reduce the velocity of the metabolic reactions involved. There is little information on the biochemistry of tropical forest tree seeds related to their storability. It was investigated the influence of the composition of lipids and soluble sugars of two storage compartments, the cotyledons and the embryonic axis, of Melanoxylon brauna Schot. (Leguminosae- Caesalpinioideae), a hardwood known as black brauna, seeds stored at 20 ºC for 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months (natural ageing) and for 0, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours at 40 ºC (accelerated ageing). The levels of fatty acids and monosaccharides varied differentially in each of the embryo storage compartments. Changes in oligosaccharide levels were similar for both types of ageing, diminishing in both compartments. Ageing can be attributed to the significant decrease of oligosaccharides and the increase of glucose in both types of ageing and both embryo compartments.

The closely related to the Pseudomonas orientalis strain Pseudomonas sp. acc. no. JX090307 was isolated from hyphae of the phytopathogenic oomycete Phytophthora alni spp. alni. In in-vitro antagonistic tests, the living bacterium JX090307 and its cell extract showed antibiosis activity against different fungal pathogens of forest tree species, particularly against Verticillium dahliae and some strains of P. alni ssp. alni. Investigating the cell extract of JX090307 by means of LC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS and -MS/MS techniques, more than 30 cyclic lipodepsipeptids (CLPs) were found. 24 of them belong to a novel group of CLPs named PPZPM. The cyclic lipodepsidecapeptides PPZPMs are composed of a β-hydroxy fatty acid linked to a peptide part comprising 10 amino acids, where 8 of them are organized in a cyclic structure. PPZPMs differ from members of the Viscosin and Amphisin group by the number of amino acids forming the cyclic structure. The two main components, PPZPM-1a and PPZPM-2a, were investigated additionally by means of NMR spectroscopy.

Nothofagus alpina,N. obliqua,N. glauca,N. leonii,N. dombeyiandN. pumilioseeds exhibited consistent, albeit slight, sensitivity to extreme desiccation, but nevertheless maintained viability at low moisture contents and cool temperatures (–10° to –20°C) over 2 years.Nothofagus alpina,N. obliqua,N. glauca,N. leoniiandN. dombeyiconformed to the seed viability equation of Ellis and Roberts; sensitivity of longevity to temperature was quantitatively similar to that of crop seeds, sensitivity to moisture was somewhat less, and a low-moisture-content limit to the equation was detected at 4.8% moisture content in hermetic storage at 65 °C, and possibly similar moisture contents at 30–40°C. These five species show orthodox seed storage behaviour. Therefore,ex-situconservation of theseNothofagusspecies in seed banks is possible, but the quality of seed lots collected requires attention. Seed storage behaviour was not defined inN. pumilio: initial seed quality was poor and loss of viability was detected over 2 years at 0°, –10° and –20°C at 2.7% moisture content, but not at 5.2%. The results confirm that the economy of nature in seed storage physiology extends to forest tree seeds, but the repeated observation of reduced sensitivity of longevity to moisture in forest tree seeds requires further investigation.
