The wood-feeding cockroach, Cryptocercus punctulatus Scudder, is endemic to the Southern Appalachian Mountains where its range extends from southwestern New York to Alabama. Here, it is reported from four monadnocks (isolated mountains) in the Piedmont of North Carolina. This finding expands the recorded distribution of the insect and is congruent with the pattern of other montane species isolated in these habitats as a result of climatic changes associated with glaciation.
