The present paper focuses on Self Psychology Approach and a case study following this approach. First, Self Psychology Theory will be introduced following the main ideas of theory’s founder Heinz Kohut. In this part, the structure and development of self, selfobject needs and self disorders will be explained. Mainly, two selfobject needs (mirroring and idealizing need) will be the focus. Following this introduction to the theory, self-psychologically oriented psychotherapy process will be discussed along with its major intervention principles. Then, a case with avoidant personality characteristics will be introduced and formulated according to Self Psychology. The case will be conceptualized as a self disorder; and the narcissistic needs possibly not enough met during childhood will be emphasized. At the final part, the psychotherapy process, and experiences of the therapist will be shared. Through this study, it is aimed to highlight that psychotherapists should focus on clients’ needs, stay in the here-in-now, listen, make an effort to understand, and show this effort to the clients. It is also emphasized that ruptures during therapy should not be the moments that therapists should be afraid of, but instead they should be perceived as opportunities for the growth of clients as well as the therapeutic relationship. Interrelationships among client progress in stuttering therapy, the nature of the affect interchange between client and clinician, and certain personality characteristics of both client and clinician were studied. Sixteen young adult male stutterers and their 11 graduate student clinicians served as subjects. Results support observations that the clinicians' and clients' personalities are significant variables in the stuttering therapy situation, support observations that important similarities exist between stuttering therapy and psychotherapy, and suggest that it is more accurate to note stages in the therapeutic relationship, rather than to characterize the relationship as if it were the same throughout therapy.

The self psychology of Heinz Kohut can be usefully integrated with current clinical interventions in social work. The authors discuss the major principles of self psychology, applying them to work with the elderly. Emphasis is on the striving for growth and affirmation in the elderly and on how more subtle treatment dimensions, such as empathy and transference, can be understood.

This study explores the effects of teaching EFL students to use an outline in their English essays. The researchers maintain that using outlines can raise students’ awareness of different audience expectations embedded in the rhetoric of the target language (English) and culture and can improve their English academic writing. The study was based on a four-week long case study at a university in Xi’an, China, in which 24 Chinese EFL students at the College of Translation Studies participated. A discourse analysis was conducted by comparing the Chinese EFL students’ English essays produced at the beginning of the study with those produced at the end of the study after learning and practicing outlining for writing the English essays. Email inquiries were used for understanding the participants’ viewpoints on learning how to write English essay outlines. The findings reveal that teaching EFL students to use outlining in their English essays is an effective way to help them improve their essay writing. Not only can it enhance the students’ understanding about using the English thesis statements, but it can also help improve the use of related, logical, and specific detailed examples to support the main ideas in their essays. The email inquiries also revealed that the students believe that outline learning helped them to understand the differences between Chinese and English essay writing. The implications of the study for intercultural rhetoric are also discussed.
