Dried and powdered leaves of Albizia chevalieri were extracted using ethanol. The extract was fractionated to give methanol, chloroform and pet-ether. The four extracts obtained; ethanol, chloroform, methanol and pet-ether were evaluated for antioxidant activity using 2,2-diphenyl-1-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity assay. The results of the DPPH scavenging activity indicated a concentration-dependent antioxidant activity. The DPPH scavenging activity of the ethanol, chloroform and methanol extracts were found to be promising. There is no significant difference in the antioxidant activity between the ethanol, chloroform and methanol extracts with that of standard Ascorbic acid at 10, 25, 250 and 500 μg/ml concentrations. This showed that the ethanol, chloroform and methanol leave extracts of the plant has the potency of scavenging free radicals in vitro and may provide leads in the ongoing search for natural antioxidants from Nigerian medicinal plants to be used in treating diseases related to free radical reactions.

Glucolesquerellin (2), glucohesperin (3), quercetin 3-O-sophoroside (4), and quercetin 3-O-sophoroside-7-O-glucoside (5), isolated from the fruit of Dithyrea wislizenii , were quantified by HPLC. The fruit extract and flavonoids were not found to be toxic by using a brine shrimp lethality assay. The fruit extract and the flavonoids and glucosinolates were submitted to a free-radical scavenging activity assay with the diphenylpicrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH•). The concentration of quercetin (6) (a positive control for the flavonoids) able to scavenge 50% of DPPH• (SC50) was 32 ± 2 µmol/L (or 4 ± 1 µg/mL), which was about 27 times more potent than the crude extract. Compounds 4 and 5 had a SC50, the concentration of the compound required to scavenge 50% of the DPPH•, of 78 ± 1 µmol/L and 113 ± 10 µmol/L, respectively. The positive control for the glucosinolates, glucoraphasatin, (1) had a SC50 of 1768 ± 60 µmol/L. The glucosinolates 2 and 3 had a SC50 of 7819 ± 1968 and 970 ± 63 µmol/L, respectively.

Moringa oleifera have been evaluated for its antioxidant activity. M. oleifera leaves were extracted with methanol, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane and n-hexane. The antioxidant activity of extracts were evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity assay and an improved 2,2’-azino-bis-[3-ethylbenzothiazoline sulphonate] (ABTS) radical cation decolorization assay in vitro. Trolox was used as standard with IC50 5.89 μg/mL in DPPH assay and 3.06 μg/mL in ABTS assay. The methanol extract showed the highest free radical scavenging activity with IC50 value of 49.30 μg/mL in DPPH assay and 11.73 μg/mL in ABTS assay. This study provided that M. oleifera leaves possess antioxidant.

Yinchenhao (Artemisia capillaris Thunb.) is a pharmaceutical agent that not only shows therapeutic effects against hepatobiliary diseases but also offers various physiological benefits. This study examined the extraction rates of antioxidant extracts from Yinchenhao leaves using different solvents. The extraction rates using different solvents were as follows: ethanol (12.1 ± 0.87%) > water (7.7 ± 0.45%) > n-butanol (1.3 ± 0.16%) ethyl acetate > (1.3 ± 0.14%) > n-hexane (1.1 ± 0.15%). The n-butanol and ethyl acetate extracts showed higher 1,1-Diphenyl-2 picrylhydrazyl radical free radical scavenging activity, 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonate) free radical scavenging activity and ferric ion reducing antioxidant activity, while n-hexane extracts showed weak antioxidant activity. In conclusion, Yinchenhao leaf has potential as a natural antioxidant, and n-butanol and ethyl acetate may be effective extraction solvents for studying its antioxidant activities.

Now a days, oxidative stress is one of the major disease around the world. The excess production of oxidants in the body are key source for development of different chronic diseases and are leading to damage the multiple organs' function, finally to cellular mortality. The natural remedy is the most important medicine to control the overproduction of oxidants and to obtain more antioxidants. Natural product have been using to treat diseases and as food supplements as nutrients. In this point of view, the current study was carried to evaluate the antioxidant activity of Spilanthes acmella root parts. The free radical scavenging activity was studied against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), superoxide and hydroxyl free radicals using standard methods. The Spilanthes acmella root part extracts showed concentration dependent antioxidant activity on tested free radicals. The extracts showed modest effect on free radicals compared to the standard drug ascorbic acid and hydro-alcoholic extract possesses more activity than other two extracts. The end results of current study clearly state that Spilanthes acmella root possess free radical scavenging activity and also confirms its' traditional value in traditional medicine. The further research is worthful on isolation of different bioactive molecules and different biological activities evaluation on Spilanthes acmella.

Background: Ormeloxifene (Centchroman) is a Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator (SERM) which acts as estrogen antagonist and having anti progestogenic activity also. It is being used in the management of dysfunctional uterine bleeding and as nonhormonal oral contraceptive. It is also being investigated for the indications such as osteoporosis, breast and endometrial carcinoma. In this study, we have evaluated the Antioxidant potential of drug by using DPPH and NO synthase Assay. It was found that ormeloxifene has significant antioxidant activity which could be cause for its use in various gynaecological and other conditions.Methods: In this study, we have demonstrated in vitro antioxidant activity of ormeloxifene. DPPH and NO synthase assay tests were done for different concentrations of ormeloxifene.Results: In our study, it showed that the free radical scavenging activity of ormeloxifene was less in lower concentration and increased in the higher concentration in DPPH assay. The free radical scavenging activity of drug ormeloxifene was 22% at 100µg/ml and 27% for the concentrations of 1000µg/ml in DPPH assay. No scavenging activity was 3% at 100µg/ml and 11% at 1000µg/ml.Conclusions: The invitro antioxidant analysis of ormeloxifene, was proved to be a potent antioxidant.

Background: Mandarin by-products, such as peels and seeds, are considered as one of the naturel source of phenolic compounds. Aim: The objective of the present study was to compare the phenolic compounds contents and antioxidant activity of different parts (pulps, seeds, juices, and peels) of three mandarins varieties extracts. Material and methods: Total phenolic, flavonoid, and proanthocyanidin contents of the extracts were assessed while, the antioxidant activity was evaluated using three tests including ferric reducing power, free radical scavenging activity, and phosphomolybdate. Results: The Mediterranean Mandarin peels present a high total phenolics and flavonoids contents with values of 2445.62 mg GAE/100g FW and 609.78 mg QE/100g FW, respectively. Likewise, the clementine juice showed the highest proanthocyanins contents with value of 46.67 mg CE/100g FW. Seeds and pulps of the three varieties present the lowest phenolic compound contents. Mediterranean Mandarin juice showed a strong ferric reducing power and phosphomolybdate with values of 1270.91 and 190.19 mg AAE/100g FW, respectively, however, the peels reveled a strong free radical scavenging activity with value of 259.89 mg AAE/100 g FW. Statistical analysis showed a positive correlation between the antioxidant activity and the phenolic compounds contents of the three studied mandarins varieties extracts. Conclusion: Among the analyzed cultivars, Mediterranean mandarin variety may be considered as the most promising source of polyphenols and antioxidants, compared to the clementine and Satsuma varieties. Moreover, this study also highlights important properties of the fruit parts generally considered wastes. Keywords: Mandarins, different parts, phenolics compounds, antioxidant activity.

Free radicals are reactive molecules involved in many physiological processes and have been associated with many diseases, such as ageing, cancer, arthritis and liver injury and cardiac complications. In polyherbal formulations HAF-I and HAF-II, described below, the total phenolics content were found to be 34.4±0.10 and 27.6±1.20 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g and total flavonoids contents, total tannin contents were 24.7±0.25 and 18.1±1.20 RE/g and 12.31±0.25 and 9.48±1.85 GAE/g, respectively. Free radical scavenging activity was determined according to the elimination of DPPH radicals. Total phenol content was determined by the Folin–Ciocalteu reaction. The relative antioxidant ability of the polyherbal formulations were investigated through two in vitro models, namely, antioxidant capacity by radical scavenging activity using α, α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and nitric oxide (NO) methods. The extracts were used at 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 μg/mL concentrations and radical scavenging activity was determined in terms of inhibition percentage. The IC50 (concentration required for 50% inhibition) were calculated for each radical. The present study was designed to evaluate the free radical scavenging activity of hydro-alcoholic extracts of polyherbal formulations (HAF-I & HAF-II) various in-vitro models using ascorbic acid and rutin as references. The in vitro free radical DPPH activities were found to be 74.17±0.18 & 75.30±0.18 and NO antioxidant activity were found to be 75.3±1.10 & 76.17±1.24 at maximum concentration of 100 μg/mL. The in-vitro anti-oxidant activity of these polyherbal formulations may be due to the presence of polyphenols.

Moringa oleifera (M. oleifera) has been known as a medicinal plant. The objectives of this study is to identify the chemical compositions of M. oleifera pods extracts and to evaluate its total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity. The methodology of this study began with the collection of the pod's sample, drying and grinding the pods into powdered form. M. oleifera pods extracts were prepared by using methanol (MeOH), hexane, dichloromethane (DCM), and ethyl acetate (EtOAc) solvent which yielded respective residues. All extracts were subjected to Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to identify its chemical compositions. Major compound found in hexane, DCM, EtOAc, and MeOH extracts were nonanoic acid (30.94 %), diisooctyl phthalate (89.45 %), benzoic acid, 4-hydroxy- (37.57 %) and octanoic acid (19.19 %), respectively. The TPC quantification was done via Folin-Ciocalteu method showed that EtOAc extract has the highest phenols content with 500.05 mg GAE/g. Generally, all extract contain moderate phenolic content. M. oleifera pods extracts were screened for the antioxidant activity via 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical. Hexane, DCM and EtOAc extracts exhibited good free radical scavenging activity with IC50 of 65.79 μg/mL, 74.93 μg/mL and 82.83 μg/mL, respectively. MeOH showed the lowest free radical scavenging activity with IC50 529.6 μg/mL. However, antioxidant activity of all extracts was low compared to standard, ascorbic acid (AA) with IC50 of 19.57 μg/mL. The presence of various bioactive constituents in the M. oleifera pods extracts might contributed to the antioxidant activity of the plant.
