Abstract We consider the possibility that dark matter is stabilised by a discrete Z2 symmetry which arises from a subgroup of a U(1)′ gauge symmetry, spontaneously broken by integer charged scalars, and under which the chiral quarks and leptons do not carry any charges. A chiral fermion χ with half-integer charge is odd under the preserved Z2, and hence becomes a stable dark matter candidate, being produced through couplings to right-handed neutrinos with vector-like U(1)′ charges, as in the type Ib seesaw mechanism. We calculate the relic abundance in such a low energy effective seesaw model containing few parameters, then consider a high energy renormalisable model with a complete fourth family of vector-like fermions, where the chiral quark and lepton masses arise from a seesaw-like mechanism. With the inclusion of the fourth family, the lightest vector-like quark can contribute to the dark matter production, enlarging the allowed parameter space that we explore.

AbstractTopological Dirac semimetals have emerged as a platform to engineer Berry curvature with time-reversal symmetry breaking, which allows to access diverse quantum states in a single material system. It is of interest to realize such diversity in Dirac semimetals that provides insight on correlation between Berry curvature and quantum transport phenomena. Here, we report the transition between anomalous Hall and chiral fermion states in three-dimensional topological Dirac semimetal KZnBi, which is demonstrated by tuning the direction and flux of Berry curvature. Angle-dependent magneto-transport measurements show that both anomalous Hall resistance and positive magnetoresistance are maximized at 0° between net Berry curvature and rotational axis. We find that the unexpected crossover of anomalous Hall resistance and negative magnetoresistance suddenly occurs when the angle reaches to ~70°, indicating that Berry curvature strongly correlates with quantum transports of Dirac and chiral fermions. It would be interesting to tune Berry curvature within other quantum phases such as topological superconductivity.

Abstract We construct a gauge theory based in the supergroup G = SU(2, 2|2) that generalizes MacDowell-Mansouri supergravity. This is done introducing an extended notion of Hodge operator in the form of an outer automorphism of su(2, 2|2)-valued 2-form tensors. The model closely resembles a Yang-Mills theory — including the action principle, equations of motion and gauge transformations — which avoids the use of the otherwise complicated component formalism. The theory enjoys H = SO(3, 1) × ℝ × U(1) × SU(2) off-shell symmetry whilst the broken symmetries G/H, translation-type symmetries and supersymmetry, can be recovered on surface of integrability conditions of the equations of motion, for which it suffices the Rarita-Schwinger equation and torsion-like constraints to hold. Using the matter ansatz —projecting the 1 ⊗ 1/2 reducible representation into the spin-1/2 irreducible sector — we obtain (chiral) fermion models with gauge and gravity interactions.
