Abstract Let ( K , 𝒪 , k ) {(K,\mathcal{O},k)} be a p-modular system with k algebraically closed and 𝒪 {\mathcal{O}} unramified, and let Λ be an 𝒪 {\mathcal{O}} -order in a separable K-algebra. We call a Λ-lattice L rigid if Ext Λ 1 ⁡ ( L , L ) = 0 {{\operatorname{Ext}}^{1}_{\Lambda}(L,L)=0} , in analogy with the definition of rigid modules over a finite-dimensional algebra. By partitioning the Λ-lattices of a given dimension into “varieties of lattices”, we show that there are only finitely many rigid Λ-lattices L of any given dimension. As a consequence we show that if the first Hochschild cohomology of Λ vanishes, then the Picard group and the outer automorphism group of Λ are finite. In particular, the Picard groups of blocks of finite groups defined over 𝒪 {\mathcal{O}} are always finite.

AbstractMahan Mitra (Mj) proved Cannon–Thurston maps exist for normal hyperbolic subgroups of a hyperbolic group (Mitra in Topology, 37(3):527–538, 1998). We prove that Cannon–Thurston maps do not exist for infinite normal hyperbolic subgroups of non-hyperbolic $${{\,\mathrm{CAT}\,}}(0)$$ CAT ( 0 ) groups with isolated flats with respect to the visual boundaries. We also show Cannon–Thurston maps do not exist for infinite infinite-index normal $${{\,\mathrm{CAT}\,}}(0)$$ CAT ( 0 ) subgroups with isolated flats in non-hyperbolic $${{\,\mathrm{CAT}\,}}(0)$$ CAT ( 0 ) groups with isolated flats. We obtain a structure theorem for the normal subgroups in these settings and show that outer automorphism groups of hyperbolic groups have no purely atoroidal $$\mathbb {Z}^2$$ Z 2 subgroups.

Abstract We construct a gauge theory based in the supergroup G = SU(2, 2|2) that generalizes MacDowell-Mansouri supergravity. This is done introducing an extended notion of Hodge operator in the form of an outer automorphism of su(2, 2|2)-valued 2-form tensors. The model closely resembles a Yang-Mills theory — including the action principle, equations of motion and gauge transformations — which avoids the use of the otherwise complicated component formalism. The theory enjoys H = SO(3, 1) × ℝ × U(1) × SU(2) off-shell symmetry whilst the broken symmetries G/H, translation-type symmetries and supersymmetry, can be recovered on surface of integrability conditions of the equations of motion, for which it suffices the Rarita-Schwinger equation and torsion-like constraints to hold. Using the matter ansatz —projecting the 1 ⊗ 1/2 reducible representation into the spin-1/2 irreducible sector — we obtain (chiral) fermion models with gauge and gravity interactions.

Abstract We compute the partition function for 6d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1 SO(2N) gauge theories compactified on a circle with ℤ2 outer automorphism twist. We perform the computation based on 5-brane webs with two O5-planes using topological vertex with two O5-planes. As representative examples, we consider 6d SO(8) and SU(3) gauge theories with ℤ2 twist. We confirm that these partition functions obtained from the topological vertex with O5-planes indeed agree with the elliptic genus computations.

Abstract We propose Type IIB 5-brane configurations that engineer the 6d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (1, 0) SCFTs with SO(N) gauge symmetry coupled to a single tensor multiplet on a circle, by considering RG flows on Higgs branches of D-type conformal matter theories. We test the brane systems against known Calabi-Yau threefolds for the 6d SCFTs on a circle. In addition we study a new RG flow involving Higgs vevs of scalar operators with Kaluza-Klein momentum along the circle. The new RG flow results in the 5-brane webs for the 6d SCFTs of DN gauge symmetry compactified on a circle with Z2 outer-automorphism twist.

A biquaternionic version of the Dirac Equation is introduced, with a procedure for converting four-component spinors to elements of the Pauli algebra. In this version, mass appears as a coefficient between the 4-gradient of a spinor and its image under an outer automorphism of the Pauli algebra. The charge conjugation operator takes a particulary simple form in this formulation and switches the sign of the mass coefficient, so that for a solution invariant under charge conjugation the mass has to equal zero. The multiple of the charge conjugation operator by the imaginary unit turns out to be a complex Lorentz transformation. It commutes with the outer automorphism, while the charge conjugation operator itself anticommutes with it, providing a second more algebraic proof of the main theorem. Considering the Majorana equation, it is shown that non-zero mass of its solution is imaginary.
