ABSTRACT André Brouillet’s (1857-1914) famous group tableau ‘A Clinical Lesson at La Salpêtrière’ (French: Une leçon clinique à la Salpêtrière) is possibly the most celebrated painting in the history of neurology. His depiction of one of Jean-Martin Charcot’s legendary “Tuesday Lessons” includes portraits of not only one of the master’s most famous patients, but also of his pupils, the heirs to the founder of modern neurology. However, the painter himself has long been neglected, and even his other paintings on medical subjects are little acknowledged. The authors aim to bring attention to Brouillet’s life and times, as well as the remainder of his notable works; and in giving a proper context to the famous painting, neurologists today may be able to appreciate better the early history of our field and its cultural impact.

The main goal was to analyze the history of neurology of Ukraine using exonumia materials. Exonumia (a form of medallic educational art) is a branch of historical science numismatics (from the Latin numisma — coin), which originated in the 19th century and became closely related to economics, politics, culture and law; it includes the thematic study of medals and plaques. The medal became the prototype of a commemorative (memorial) coin. This work presents a catalogue of 43 numismatic materials (medals), including some unique ones, presented for the first time, brief biographies of physicians (21 persons) who have made an invaluable contribution to the formation of this scientific discipline. Unfortunately, for now the memory of famous doctors of the past has not been sufficiently marked by the release of numismatic (exonumia) products, so in the future we hope for a systematic approach to this matter, for the purposeful promotion of the achievements of neurology by meaning of numismatics, which provides an illustrative example for studying the history of medicine, contributes to an increase in the level of education of doctors. The authors expect the appearance of new interesting materials of such small forms of art.

The Swiss Archives of Neurology and Psychiatry was founded in 1917 by Constantin von Monakow (1853–1930), the first professor of neurology at the University of Zurich and founder of the Swiss Neurological Society. The carefully bound booklets of these Archives are to be found completely in the scientific library of the Psychiatric University Hospital Burghölzli in Zürich. It is hoped that this treasure trove of knowledge will be preserved for all those interested in the history of neurology and psychiatry in its integrity. Today’s work in and on this archives allows time and again to bring out older works and to present them in the light of more modern concepts. Of medical–historical interest is also the category of obituaries, occurring in almost all issues, virtually a “Who’s Who” of neurologists and psychiatrists who have laid the foundations for our subjects.
