Abstract This article presents the first edition of an Old-Babylonian acrographic vocabulary excavated in the city of Ur. Although fragmentary and poorly preserved, this text provides interesting new aspects for the understanding of the so-called „dialects“ of Sumerian and of bilingual language teaching in general, and identifies lurû(m) „(man with a) thin/croaky voice“ as a (person with a) speech defect described as „Emesal“. In addition, it contains entries of business terminology known from the north Babylonian „Sippar Phrasebook“, the Old Babylonian „Forerunner“ of canonical Ura 1 and 2.

The article discusses the problem of the formation of speech breathing in preschool children with an erased form of dysarthria using the biological feedback method. In children suffering from speech impairment, the work of the respiratory system is not normal. Disorders of prosody supplement violations of the sound-producing side of speech. As a result, in children, including the ones with dysarthria, speech becomes unclear and slurred. The theoretical part of the study considers the specificity of the prosodic side of speech in children with an erased form of dysarthria from the point of view of various researchers. The problem of dependence between the prosodic side of speech and the severity of a speech defect is considered. The practical part of the study reveals the content of the organisation of the empirical study on the formation of diaphragmatic relaxation breathing using a hardware-diagnostic complex “BF” (Biological Feedback). It has been established that the biological feedback method contributes to the formation of diaphragmatic-relaxation breathing in preschool children with an erased form of dysarthria. In pre-schoolers, suffering from erased dysarthria and having a history of attention deficit hyperactivity syndrome, the process of formation of diaphragmatic relaxation breathing becomes more complicated.

I argue in this article that the scholiast's claim (schol. in Pi.O.6.88) that Pindar was ἰσχνόφωνος meant that he was believed to be a stammerer rather than a weak-voiced person. I have attempted to show how later commentators developed some points of Alexandrian critics’ judgement of Pindar's poetry into a conventional biographical reference to the poet's speech defect.

A television documentary on speech therapy is visible on the screen. A logopedist (speech-defect expert) coaches a young man to overcome his stutter through hypnosis. “You will speak loudly and clearly, freely and easily, unafraid of your voice and your speech,” she instructs. The boy hesitates but finally musters the words: “I can speak.” Thus Andrei Tarkovsky begins Zerkalo [Mirror], his poetic film about personal memory and cultural trauma (conceived in 1964 and completed in 1974).3 The symbolism of this scene was impossible for Tarkovsky's Soviet intelligentsia audience to miss. The stutterer coming to speech allegorized the artist coming to free expression in Russia after Stalin, struggling to adapt to alternating intervals of liberating “thaw” and oppressive “freeze,” fluency and silence, in the period of de-Stalinization that Nikita Khrushchev's secret speech at the 20th Party Congress of 1956 set into motion. The crisis of the solo stutterer's speech in the film stood in for the larger emerging crisis of how to represent socialist reality, a world that once had been captured solely by socialist realism—that is, until Khrushchev deprived Stalinism of its status as real socialism and thus invalidated the basis of socialist realism.

ABSTRACTSpeech is a complex process. The evaluation of speech in an individual with cleft palate is difficult, and the existing classification of phonemes is complicated. Sanskrit, an ancient language, has an arrangement of alphabets that is orderly and scientific and therefore provides a simple means to understand the production of phonemes and memorize them. This article demonstrates the inherent advantage of this arrangement of Sanskrit alphabets to effectively analyze defective cleft palate speech and provides a tool for surgeons to decide a course of action in their routine clinical practice. Improved insight into the speech defect by the surgeon also facilitates better coordination with the speech language pathologist in assessment and treatment of a child with cleft palate.
